I would call it a 2D horizontal scrolling, sprite based shoot-em-up (or 2HSSBSEU for short).

Nah, it's a first person shooter. What else is it? Fair enough it's on rails, and isn't actually 3D, but so what? You might want to say it's a 2D FPS on rails, but at the end of the day it's still an FPS. Could argue that LOM was an FPR (first person RPG?). Wasn't 3D though. Then again, could also say that LOM was pseudo 3D, much like operation wolf was. ie. sizes of sprites gave it the impression of depth. Only slightly mind, but still. Hell, anything on a monitor is simulated 3D anyhows. Doom wasn't even proper 3D apparently (it cheated).

So yeah, I would say FPS, or even retro FPS if you really wish.

Cheers

Actually, I am curious as to whether you\'d get away with just making an FPS - albeit, one that\'s purely centred on running around blowing sh*t up, and not any of that arsing about looking in draws and putting keys in locks. No, if we make an FPS with nothing but blowing the intestines out of vast hordes of malformed people, I\'m guessing it would qualify ..... right?

Oh yeah, cool. Make Operation Wolf into a modern FPS. It's perfect. Not only is it the daddy of shooting games, but it works quite nicely into a simple FPS, plus you are definitely improving an old game no end. Tops. Just manage to nick the graphics from Wolfenstein (the newer one) or somesuch and your laughing!

Operation Wolf is basically, Virtal Cop or Dawn of the Dead what is now affectionally dubbed, Gun Survival game.
However Rich has said that it can be a full FPS or even 3rdPS, provided it is like Serious Sam where your innondated with people and are senselessly killing rather than something slow and tactical.

Just to get the essecence of the game down

I'm thinking a fast arcadey FPS will go down a treat - any excuse for some mindless violence .

If I decide to enter (I'm undecided atm) I'll just modify the Merc 2 engine to run on rails

I was thinking a cool, fully 3D rails shooter... (perhaps you're in a train or someting) would be interesting...

Now that would be cool. Especially if it automatically moves forwards and backwards now and again. Eg. jumping from one train to another. Something like that Star Wars N64 game, but with no user control. With some speech through the radio along the lines of a superior officer ordering you onto the other train etc etc. Could be really really good.

Operation Wolf is basically a computerised version of Scrabble. The idea is to spell as many lupine or hospital related words as you possibly can in 10 minutes. If you spell a good word over a triple word score you invariably win.

I'm actually more excited about doing a Scorched Earth remake--- something I wanted to do anyways.

How about Gorillas throwing tanks or tanks shooting Gorillas? :-P

Jeku did you see that game War of the Monsters?
well anyways... that would be a cool basis for the game. Have it so you have like limited ammo of the cars around you, meaning you HAVE to move once your out of cars making it more interesting ^_^

have the fight around a city or something hehee

"Gun Survival" eh? I've always wondered if those sorts of games had an official title, and now I guess they do I've looked into making one of these and for the most part, the difficulty is coming up with convincing level geometry. The 2nd most difficult thing was animating the dudes. I wanted to try and recreate the "shoot off a limb" style fun brought by "House of the Dead". That was tricky... never did get off the ground....

Oh and I gave a War of the Monsters style game about 2 minuts of thought once. I decided it would be tricky to make destructable buildings, but not impossible. Again, a lot of resource required on the ol' texture artists and 3d modellers.

Thats the problem - there would be few people willing, and even less able to do decent graphics...

Just think of each building built up from pixels, and when your destroy it you delete each pixel block and replace with a dust anim and rubble particle explosion.

Most of what you need for it could be edited from the Online DB resources or DarkMatter 1/2.
You could sneakily nick from games like Quake2/3 or such too as no one plans to retail any of this, don't see it as a major problem for those with no artistic talent.

As for a House of the Dead (god i love Typing of the Dead, was an awesome concept), yeah that's possible with the Dark Matter models as they're all limbed, just need to edit the textures a bit if you want more convincing zombies.

I know it's all a pain about graphics, but currently as people seem to actually be bitching about. Graphics actually make up the exact same percentage as the rest of the game; This means it *cannot* win on graphics alone.
So no need to really worry about it imo, unless those bitching about graphics get thier way.

Just try to make something that is playable and fun. ^_^
Work on in-depth sprusing once the game is complete.

Of course you all know you can simply scale a bone inside DBPro to hide it... - in fact there's a lot you can do with bones that most people don't bother with, learn to love bones guys - and they'll love you right back.
