do lightmaps work in DBPRO? if so am i am able to render a lighted texture e.g. a wall and then take that lighted texture and put it into DBRPO as a lightmap from 3d max? i tried cartography but its a bit cumbersome right now. i read in a book im ready that i could render the lighted texture, save it, and take that light information and put into the level, but given that when using lightmaps ur actually using 2 textures for area lighted so i can only guess that it must be used carefully. well let me know if DBRPO can use Lightmaps, cause i heard there are probs.

I think what you're talking about is called "baking textures". If so, then it's just a matter of setting up the light sources in 3DS Max, baking the texture, and then loading the object and texturing it with the baked texture as you would any old object, though this one would have the appearence of a light source.

That would be only one way of giving the effect of light in your program.

The lightmapping commands in DBP should work fine. It's just a matter of making two objects, texturing them both, but then ghosting the other object. Well, it goes something like that, hopefully someone else will come around to help. Best to search this forum, as there's been lots of topics on it including one of my own somewhere.

A book? I hate book. Book is stupid.

the problem with the current lightmap commands is that both textures must use the SAME UV coordinates, which is a BIG limitation.

however for level creation, Gile[s] currently supports fully lightmapped levels exported as a single multitextured .dbo object. (see the examples in my Snowball fight and Ragdoll Monkey Bowling games)

So if I create a level, texture it, then create lightmaps for it and export the results to one .dbo file, things would work just fine?

Do .dbo files also contain the textures+lightmaps or should these be provided seperately?

a .dbo file is similar to a .x file, you still need the textures in the directory (usually the same directory as the model).

basically you create the base model in your favorite modeller (I personally use Milkshape), and get it all textured. then import the geometry into Gile[s], add lights, and build the lightmap. then you can export the entire scene into a single .dbo object, which you can load with the "load object" command. it will load up with the textures and lightmaps intact (assuming all of the texture/lightmap files are present).

of course you can also break the scene up into smaller .dbo pieces if you want (using the hide/unhide features in Gile[s]).

Go to the CS forum and download my plugin, v3.0.8. This now supports loading of CSM map files into DBPro using a single mesh that includes both base and lightmap textures. It's much faster when rendering now, plus, you can also configure the blending mode.

APEXnow - wow, excellent work! I don't use CShop so I can't try your exporter, but how did you do it? did you make your own .dbo exporter?
