I think that the stuff has changed slightly since we posted this thread, its not so much of a modelling contest as it is a "make your own avatar" thing. There is really no contest unless Mike wanted generic models for people to use if they dont have their own. Thats well and good, and we appreciate people submitting for that but the architecture of this whole thing is going to be:

-You will register your screen name and password on the website
-You will supply your triangulated, uvmapped .x model/avatar and texture image files
(all following Mike's spec)

After the files are approved they will be posted to a server where all of the clients have access. When you start up the client app the new or missing media will be downloaded to your local machine. Once you have your media, and everyone elses, you're in. This process is run every time you launch DarkLINK.exe but after the initial download of media, successive visits will be quick little downloads.

Why triangulated?
That would double the polys for my model.

Models are automatically triangulated in DBP, if not triangulated in your program. Best to triangulate them in your program first to make sure they are working.

As for the contest, I'm still accepting any type of submission. We(I) want 4 models of any type. We will be using 4 total models for DarkTopia, but will allow the user to change the uv map to their liking. A generic human being is perfect, but something like Peter's robot guy works as well, for it can be textured multiple ways.

Being as there's only been 4 or 5 screenshots of models, it seems very likely. On the other side though, there's plenty of time to model more objects for the other users.

Well, since my punk model didn't have a chance, decided to make a different one:

A barbarian in chain mail and studded leather armor. Will animate the thing later, should be done by tommorrow if I can get my act in gear.

Cheers,
Preston

everyone is supplying their own model or using a generic one so there is really no cap - it will coincide with the amount of registered users. When a user is registered and their model is submitted and approved, the media files are placed in a repository on the server. When you start the DarkLink client, a media manager checks to see if the repository has new or missing media in comparison to your local media directory. Whatever is new or missing is downloaded, then you are allowed to enter DarkTOPIA. We just got the Media Manager working today (thanks to ZKAT8IT)

On a side note... BOOOOOOOOOOOOOK???
