Well, the initial screenshot looks pretty good. I see that you're working on the grass texture for the matrix, so that's good It really needs to be tileable. I would also suggest making the world map image smaller in the final layout, as it takes up quite a large portion of the screen (that, or make it slightly see-thru).

It will be interesting to see how you work out the camera, landscapes, and character models

Don't want to sound horrible but you are gonna have to come up with more than a screen with a plain green matrix, a map and a couple of health bars before people can comment properly. What you have done so far can be knocked up in about 10 minutes.

We want to see characters, hills and buildings before anything should even be posted in this forum.

Sorry to put you down like this but it's the sad truth.

I believe that the layout is not that important at the beginning.
When I make a game with stats-bars, I only print the numbers on the screen (TEXT-command), and once the programming of the base is finished, then I care about doing good-looking stuff.

Oh well, 100 lines of code shouldnt be difficult to replace, now you can do it more effiecent and better looking. Back-up to external storage frequent cause once the project grows this kinda thing will be fatal... well u'll be alive but your project won't.

I would definetly follow the advice given and not worry about the landscape at the moment. What I do with any project containing a matrix is just randomize it so it's slightly hilly, and then I just work on the actual engine. Once the engine itself is done, it's quite simple to actually develop a more realistic landscape (and character movement will already be worked out).

I would heartily suggest completing at least a rough draft of your complete game engine before worrying about graphics. Sure, it may not be as fun...but the engine is more important than the graphics. And if you ever feel frustrated with the game, or just don't feel like programming...don't. Take a break, or work on another aspect of the game. Coming back with a fresh mind is often the best solution

I'm currently on vacation, but when I get back, if you have any questions or need some help getting started, feel free to contact me. I'll be more than happy to get you started on the right foot
