Does anyone know where I could get a model for an explosion? Or would I use a sprite?

That really depends on your game and the effect that you are trying to achieve. Explosions can be made from sprites, layered/rotating models, 3d sprites (like exploding ring animation on a plane), or particle systems (stock or home grown.)

A little more info might help... what kind of game? is the style realistic or toonish? which language DBC or DBP?

Language - DBPro

Type - I'll have to say... a mix between arcade & realistic.
I don't want poor graphics, but I don't want like a nuclear explosion or something stunningly realistic.

If you want 3D explosions, you could try learning about 3D particle affects in DBP. Good luck!
