I forgot to add, that if your copy is not legal, the update will probably not work, as it checks the product keys.

The problem is that Automatic Update does not say the file is released yet, nor does their web site at the moment - it's all "coming soon". Looking at their site you'd think it was still not officially out yet and the lack of a public download implies this also.

Apparently it will be available in next week or three using windows update facility but hate to think how slow download will be with so many people downloading such a huge file. I bet even on broadband it will be painful. I'll give it a go though AFTER doing a complete backup of my systems.

According to the download (ie Automatic Update) its the full release version - and thats whats saying in the System Manager icon, and the v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com site. So, I think you can take it that its been released - unless it shouldn't have been that is...

Anyway, you can go from XP (no SP) or XP SP1 straight to XP SP2

The download size will probably be in excees of 100Mb though

If you had RC1 or RC2 the download will be slightly less

Apparently it is currently only availiable by automatic download.

There is a lot of advice for business users to *not* upgrade just yet. There are a lot of programs that are broken by SP2.

It apparently shouldn't be too much of a problem for most home users though - just make sure that you make a backup or activate the system restore system first.

Is there ? Microsoft said there may be, but I haven't come across any yet (and my commerical programs work fine too). I have noticed that the promised VS Net 2003 update isn't availiable yet.

The only slight problem I know of is that NAV doesn't register in the security centre - but then that Nortons problem.

Enough that IBM have disallowed updates to XP machines until they have amended and tested their windows applications. A lot of other large companies will be doing the same too.

100 mb = ouch! So is XP SP 2 a new operating system or just a massive upgrade? After trying to upgrade our OS back at y2k I found it better to never change my OS again. Gonna make several System Restore points before attempting this one

If it was a new operating system, it would be called Longhorn. But its not, so it wont be.

Perhaps, but it is a brand new totally patched wireless router (with hardware firewall) that I got the other day. More like they only look for software firewalls.

even if you have a hardware firewall i'd recomend getting a software one anyway as things can slip through hardware ones.
