I know I shouldnt have posted twice, but I posted in the wrong room before. I just thought of this minutes ago, instead of using 3D models which are very hard to make and take alot of time making, can I use 2d sprites like the old games did, Doom, Hexen, Blood, etc? I know this is 3D games and all, but 3D models are tough, and I really want to focus more on levels and sound rather than 3 months-to-make, models.

If you're making a game you can program whatever you want for enemies.

If you talking about a game for the dbp contest mentioned in the newsletter, i don't know, but i'm guessing you can.

No no no, what I meant was, is it *possible* to use 2D characters in a first person shooter, programming it all in darkbasic. You know, make enemies like they did back in the old days.

Make a plain object and texture it with your 2d character image and keep it rotated towards the camera.

what JeBuS just described IS a 2D character. if you have a 3D background, you have to place your 2D characters in the 3D environment, so you have to use a plain and place it in 3D where the character should be. then, to keep it from looking like a flat piece of paper, you make it always face the camera.

this will give enemies that look like the original DOOM.

A plain, for all intents and purposes in DB, is a 2 dimensional 3d object.

What height should the sprite be? For close encounters I mean, when the enemy is right in front of you, Im taking a shot at 48PX high.

That depends on the size of the plane that the image is pasted to. One of the perks with this DOOM sim idea is that planes further away from the camera will be smaller. The best thing to do is write some code and see what actually works.

no what you have to do is have the sprite rotate when required that is what was done in doom the sprites rotate when the player moves around them and the sprites scale as you move towards them however i dont know if this can be done in db because sprites cannot be placed in 3d space they can only be placed in the x,y dimensions however doom also has 2d levels which are giving the impression of 3d which is very complicated but i suggest you look into it if you want to make a 2d fps.

I got the sprite to rotate whenever you face the camera, Im trying to figure out how to add some intelligence to the sprite. Im going to try to build some movement and A.I off from the old ICED Demo enemy model. If it works ill post it here, its still gonna need some work though, thanks.

EDIT--

Do....
yrotate object 3, camera angle y()
move object 3, -5
......loop
Enemy faces player--AND MOVES TOWARDS PLAYER.
Creepy huh?
