Scorched Turf

by N30FI5H + Powersoft

N30F15H and I have decided to create a DarkBASIC Professional game based on Scorched Earth for the latest competion at The Game Creators.

The main idea is that there are two or more neighbours that absolutly hate each other, even enough to start attacking each other. You have to use insane objects such as the BBQ, the kitchen sink or even your wife! Eventually the game will allow upto 4 players but primarily 2 for the TGC compo. Scorched Turf will also be in full 3D allowing cool camera shots of projectiles flying towards the enemy.

This is at the moment in early stages of developmentand th visuals are to be improved

So far there has been progress. We have the basis of a control system and a small piece of code that launches a ball into the air. You can download the current EXEs below

The projectile engine...

The game so far...

The controls...

We would like to here any comments you have about the game so far but as we have said it is still in early stages of development

Thank you
N30F15H + Powersoft

sounds like a very interesting idea... but I think it's a little early for a demo. perhaps once you get the basic engine ready you can post a demo for us to try out?

UPDATE: 14 / 08 /'04

Work Done>> Today has been spent analysing the firing system. We have made the camera now follow the bullet but that needs refining. We have also fixed a problem with the camera "zooming on" when you fire. Both players can now fire, but only one at once... this is a problem if we are to keep to our orginal idea of "Race to kill your neighbour".

To-do>> Well the priority is to fix what problems we have at the moment and then improve working ones... Hopefuly we should have a download of a working basic engine sometime tomorrow or Monday.

If there is any comments you have please feel free to post them.

Cheers,

Powersoft and N30F15H

I'm loving the concept powersoft. That is an interesting take on a remake of Scorched earth that I never would have thought of.

<Hangs head>

<Sighs loudly>

Can't wait to see some screen shots.
Good luck in the Compo.

Wasting CPU Cycles since the 286 was a hot machine.

UPDATE: 15 / 08 / 04

Work Done>> Good News today. We figured out why te bullet was apparently coming out of the back of the player. In fact it wasnt but was just the camera orientation which made it appear so. Today we have also been working on speed increases as we think that will help with the testing of the engine. The camera position has now been changed when you fire so that it follows the bullet. Some new screenshots have been posted as you can see on the first post

To-do>> Ideally we will want to have a demo by tomorrow however if its not ready we wont release one. The engine still needs ironing out though. That is going to be our main priority.

If there is any comments you have please feel free to post them.

Cheers,

Powersoft and N30F15H

UPDATE: 16 / 08 / 04

Work Done>> Not been a very productive day today. Yesterdays breakthrough with the camera has taken up all the day. The problem has been narrowed down to a section of code however we are unsure what is the problem.

To-do>> If we can get the camera setup right and working a demo will be available tonight. However no promises.

Sorry for this slow progress as i know some people are looking forward to it but we cant do anything till we get this sorted.

If there is any comments you have please feel free to post them.

UPDATE 18 / 8 / 04

Decided that the best way to solve the problems would be to rewrite the entire engine... Im currently working on the control system and firing and then will release a demo

Should be released by tonight.

UPDATE>>> Well we decided that its not enough at the moment to realease a demo. We want to get the GUI system for the weapon selecting sorted out and have two different types of bullet for a start. After that is done or perhaps earlier we will realese a demo.

Yay! It's looking very good at the moment. Even though its just cubes the GUI system pops up and closes as you wish. The engine is just being adapted now to take the selection and use the item

Well that was totally uncalled for. Some people are still learning and trying their best. More people need to try to help and encourage people instead of always bringing them down.

Back on topic. Looking forward to testing this when I get home.

It's coming right along isn't it Just a couple of things I noticed which you are probably already aware of. You may want to swap the player controls . wasd controls the right screen and arrow keys control the left screen. The player on the right screen can't turn and walk at the same time. And I can get the menus to show but not hide. Don't mind what he said just take your time and do it right. You have plenty of time. Keep at it and good luck with the compo.

Nice start, i like the idea of the items menu too and that you'll be able to scroll down to select and item when you need it, once the character models are changed for the actual characters for the game this game will start coming along nicely, keep up the good work

i was bored so i made a little snippet that does the split screen in one function, and it seems to work ok. there's a flag for the function, 0 = vertical split and 1 = horizontal split:
