While we are waiting for a few updates in DBP Ive been working on a little bit of media. My specialty, swords. Done two more. The Pearl Blade and the Blaze Sword. Heres a couple shots (redoing the pearl blade texture as it is yucky in my eyes, need comments)

Pearl Blade:

Blaze Sword:

Swords dun have to be incredibly detailed as they arent going to be viewed from that close up (farther away then in the shots)

Heres basically the closest the cam will get to a sword (I ripped away at vertices to get Deen into this position xD - Will look much better animated )

Need comments I mean...C&C not 'the handle looks bad' I need to know how it should look rather then how it does look

the "pearl blade"'s handle is a bit pointed - might look nicer if it were smooth - but overwise they are good

New sword, untextured as of now. The blade will glow blue in game so I added a little glow effect to give you an idea. Sword is just colored atm, no texture yet. Need critique on the model.

And those things dangling from the handle are paper charms which will have physics in game

hey Rpgamer, I never would have thought you were still at it! I admire your tenacicity. My hats off to you! However I think you need to beat your texturer with some tutorials...or a BIG STICK. No offense.

It's been a long time since I've surfed these forums..Glad to see your still hanging in there! Keep on hanging on. Btw I must say that texture on Deen looks mighty snazzy! I thought you would have replaced my old texture with something better by now.

But hey, it looks good on him in that stance.

Cheers man.

Humm the hilt gard on the light blade makes the sword look... less of itself, in addition with the hamafudas, makes it look droppy, humm, try inverting the hilt so that it is upwards, plus a gard is suppost to lock the enemies blade from your hand, that design would slide it into your forearm

Pearl Blade:

It's got a nice flow and shape to it, but it doesn't look like it could cut. Pearl's are suppose to be eleagent, shimmering, and smooth, and the sword really seems to lack those features. I'd recommend doing a bevel on the sword to give it some curvesand make it look sharper and smoother.

I know you said not to critique the handles as they won't be seen, but that's not a good enough reason to ignore that area for me. The handle looks particularly sharp in one of the regions. I also recommend adding perhaps a pearl onto the sword, or something more elegeant.

Blaze Sword:

I like the handle on this sword, and maybe you should do something similar to that on the Pearl Sword. The blade part of the sword doesn't generally flow though. It looks like it was carved out of wood to be honost. When I think of fire, I see flames coming out sharply, but they're smooth and flowing. Your sword doesn't have any flow. Don't be shy to push more vertices and polygons on your swords. Games are supposed to be designed for the future as they're such long projects, so you can spend additional polygons at no cost.

Oh, and bevel this sword as well on the blad.

Light Blade:

This sword I like, as it seems more like a generic sword. You may want to include some more detail into the handle. Don't tell me it won't be seen, otherwise what's the point in having physics on those little earring things?

Personally though, I don't like the earring things. The last thing I want in an intense sword duel, is to have these flat(maybe even sharp!) things busting against my hand. (Maybe Dean needs some gloves to protect his poor hands?)

--------------------------
Ok, that was my critique and I was as brutally honost as possible.

Thoes earring things are made of paper, doubt you would get a paper cut if you are realy unlucky, you ever see in thoes animes where the holy guy throws paper... pamphelts that somehow miracously fly straight to the demon guys head and they dissolve? Well thats what thoes are. (I know, I watch too much Inuyasha [Just watched ep 61-159!] So Im anime burnt.)

Maybe I'll take it back. Just back the textures. And might I suggest thinking of the practical applications for your swords. Think is this sword for cutting, thrusting,..breaking? Take the blaze sword for instance..WTF are you gonna do with it? Thrusting would be difficult..cutting would be more like ripping. How much does it weigh? Is it made for 2 hands? If so its not for thrusting..stuff like that. Perhaps your character would be better with a spear, or gisarme, or polearm...

Personally I find it better to read books. I'd suggest the "The archaeology of weapons" by R.Ewart Oakshoot. Awesome book.

About the textures. Make them look dirty and used. Blood stains, srcatches..rust. You get the idea.

Good luck man, and keep us posted.

Hmm sometimes I tend to stray away from the classical sword look, into the worlds of FF7/10.

Im doing the textures mostly for practice. Ive been searching for a texture artist for as long as I can remember (Back when I was looking for a texture artist for Deen and you came along, yep..still looking) So I figured I better get good at texturing seeing as it appears that Ill be the one doing them all >_<

The swords are done in order. Pearl first, blaze second, light blade third. I think Im somewhat progressing

Nice looking swords.. Keep at it for sure..

Now I don't mean to be mean, but to me the Light Blade doesn't actually look like a sword at all. The blade seems somehow too rounded and it
reminds me of one of those things on a hotdog maker
where you stab the bread roll down to make a hole
in the middle before you put the hotdog in.

So maybe you could change the name Or rework the blade to give it more of
a sword like quality.

err also if a blade was made from mother of pearl it would snap like no ones business. But there are plenty of swords/blades that incorporate mother of pearl into the handle of the blade itself. If the blade is made from a big pearl itself, well then I have no idea. I've never seen a pearl that big that you could craft a sword from.

Everything happens for a reason

Bah it all depends on the swords use. Some of the earliest swords found had rounded or squarded 'points' (ends really.) Reason being they were made to swing from a horse or chariot, and whatever they hit they were meant to break, break into or through..like say a skull or collarbone. But hey, I've already harked on the 'application' part. But anyway. The pearl of his games universe could be some pretty freaking strong stuff, ya never know But yeah pearl would just snap.

Rpgamer check your '[email protected]' mail. Since I'm such a nice guy I've droped you off a little present in your mailbox.(well acutally I've been called lots of really mean perhaps fitting names several times in my life, but once or twice a friend called me 'nice')

main crit is the sword edges are flat, like a plank of wood, they don't look like they could cut anything except the pear blade which looks good but i don't personally like the "earing things', as mike described it, either.

sword edges should look sharp like this:

(you get what i mean, that sword has a sharper looking blade, you can have this sword if you want it for anything)

also let me point out this isnt a fps where weapons are #1 pritority to detail, its all 3rd person and you cant really tell when the sword is flaling about, and it saves tonnes of polys

What happens when the main character walks up to water or a mirror then? That's still not a good enough reason not to put lots of detail into the sword. I'm just playing devil's advocate though.

Lets have a fist fight over it? or if we cant afford the plane tickets..a flame war!

Nah. Just kidding. But yeah, the developer or artist has a lot of tough questions like that to answer. It's all up to rpgamer and the amount of detail he wants!

But several good consideration brought forward. Mainly older users are full of those

The blades are good, but... umm... in the 3rd image on the very top, the blade doesn't match with the character... the character looks like an everyday man and the blade looks fantasy.

In case of FXs, pick "Zone of the Enders: Second Runner..."
In case of Gothic designs, pick "Chaos Legion"...
