does anyone recommend milkshape? Never tried it, have 56k right now, (working of my old presario x1000 laptop at my grandmas)so I don't even THINK about downloading anything. I heard it is good has a large community has a lot of the feature of my beloved, yet somehow lost in 1 box out of 40, 3d max. Is any of it true?

for low-poly modelling it's a pretty nice program... no 3DS though.

If you want an easy to use low poly modeller, then Milkshape should be your bag - 3DS Max is an industry standard tool for professionals, too many people 'get hold' of copies then give up because it is hugely complicated. It would take a weekend to learn Milkshape inside and out - very few people could claim to know Max to the same extent. And regardless of features, the results would be the same - everything ends up as an .X model, so it's more important to know everything you need to know to create the models you want.

For me - I like to get whatever mesh I'm making as a .3DS, the parent modelling software is not too important, Milkshape is fine - then I texture it in Lithunwrap, and rig and animate in CharacterFX.
I've yet to find a better way to generate models quickly - and I'd say the final results are pretty good for someone without a lot of modelling experience. Considering that Lithunwrap is free, and CharacterFX is £15, Milkshape is £20 - somehow spending a lot of money on modelling software is unthinkable with the quality of the homegrown stuff that's around.

Well once nice thing that Milkshape has over Max is, that it outputs the DirectX for DBpro better. I had less problems with Milkshape than Max6.
My Max 5 plugin worked fine but 6 game me too many problems.

i tend to model in max (sometimes in milkshape), texture in max (textures made in photoshop) and use the exporters in deep exploration or milkshape

the interface isn't so clunky once you get used to it... it's just not windows standard so it seems difficult

i was just about to make a post about this, Milkshape vs Max. I need some advice.

Okay. So I got 3ds max 6 through my uncle's office a while ago, when I wasn't too much into game making. I fiddled around with it for a while, didnt do a whole lot with it. So this summer I just started back up into game making, however I've been working more on my DBP skills than my modelling skills. Thats why right now in my game the models are really really simple. So I'm thinking, my main engine is almost done, and it's time to start learning 3d modeling. So basically i dont know what to do. 3ds max 6 is very complicated, and going on what Van B said, Milkshape is very simple. I dont want to have great 3d modeling skills, just sufficient to have good graphics in my games. I also want it to be easy to learn.

So should I go for Milkshape or continue with 3ds max? Thanks

If you're looking at "bang for the buck", MilkShape delivers much more for it's low price.

But it's no Max.

But MS3D is a viable, useful tool.
