Hi all, just posting a couple of weapon screenies to get some feedback. Still to finish texturing - but the hands and arms are all rigged up . I know the thumb needs fixed on the frag grenade, just a bit of dodgy vert assigning.

That looks amazing! Great looking landscape, and that sky looks real to me. Nice work.

Ahh crap, Van-B's entering again. Just send him his prize now.

---------------------

That's already looking very good Van. Don't we all just love that new terrain pack? Hopefully the new one will be coming soon so you'll be able to squeeze some more polygons onto the screen.

I'll keep an eye on this.

I'm pretty sure he's using the advanced Terrain commands, not a matrix... and the sky is clearly visible in the first screenshot...

looking very nice so far, can't wait to see some enemy models! I assume you're making it free-roaming?

Thanks guys. The terrain is not final, just a test for Texgen really (which I highly recommend - It's FREE!), I will be making a level editor though. I have an enemy model, sorta WIP right now as I ended up using it for a biker dude for Lamptons game, but it's a nice and low polycount of 600 all-in, and it rigs quite nicely too so I'll turn him into a soldier. The arms are about 250 polys a piece, and I'm sticking to around 500 polys per gun - hopefully it'll still run nice and smooth after I throw the enemies in there too. The skybox was made with Terragen.

Each level will have a free roam (get them hostages) FPS section, then a railed (escape in that jeep) section - each railed section will use a different vehicle though.

I guess I should be glad that Van B is not working on a Snake or SE entry. (That's a compliment.)

Nice looking terrain. Once the compo's over I could do with those weapons for Merc 2 they have hands 0_0

I use texgen too, it's really good. However problem is it's not always that high res. How did you get hte hi res colourmap (not the detail map)? Did you use large input textures?

I gotta say I just love that first pic. It looks so... right.

Yeah, I have a little crush on the way the left hand supports the Uzi, it just looks comfy . It has taken a lot of experimentation though to get a good view. Tip: It's so much easier to get it right if you use an extra 3D view and line it up how you want things to look, then don't touch it, just leave it as a reference. Posing the gun without knowing what it would look like first person was real tedious.

I don't really intend to write another FPS after this - once the compo is over, all the media I've done for it can be used as long as I get a mention in the credits.

The trick with Texgen is to use high res heightmaps, It's possible to simply resize a heightmap to 1024x1024 - blur it - and use that to generate a 1024x1024 overlay textures; Texgen will only export to the same size heightmap regardless of what you specify.

Hehe, everyone says that about everyones entries - but the best thing about these compo's is the amount of games that are produced. Personally I'm just going for a really fast paced game for a change, I mean even Jetpac involves a helluva lot of sneaking around!.

Texgen is a free program written by the creator of *the awesome* CharacterFX, you just select a high res heightmap and some base textures and their ranges, and Texgen does the rest. The C++ source code is included too.

Darkcoder,
What do you mean? - seems like the sensible pose to me and it does'nt eat the whole screen, it's quite similar to the poses on BFVietnam actually.

Ahh, like the grips not tight enough on the left hand - I see. Don't know if I'll adjust that, I'll decide once I've coded the animation handling, see how it looks. It's really just the thumb part that'd need adjusting - maybe just pointing it towards the barrel more and closer to the grip will improve matters. I shall try and post a screenie tonight.
