This is a complete game, you can win it and all, but it's not the best yet. Right now it's basically just a see if you can survive all 10 levels game. There is no menu yet. Here is a few screenshots you can take a look at until I can get a demo up.

I plan on finishing it up with a nice menu system, and a two player game. I'll most likely end up adding missions and stuff, but I'm going one step at a time. I still want to add upgrades for your ship, a money system, and things like that before I work on the mission version.

Looking nice, its gonna be even better when you get of those funky ideas implmented, it'll then go from a game that looks similar to someone elses(no offence, it just looks a little similar to Reaperman's side scroller) to Izzy545's very own, side scrolling, seriously awesome, totally addictive, space shooter.

It would be great if you work on the Aliens theme, maybe one of the missions could be to rescue that funky little cat from outer space, or save people from a space frigate over run by aliens.

Yea, it is based off the tutorial by Reaperman, because I've never done 2D before and needed a start.

I think I may also allow you to land on the aliens planet at some point and do it as an overhead shooter. But that's a ways off yet.

EDIT: Oh yea, one more thing: Levels change every 250 points, it gets a bit more exciting at level 2.

I like the ideas too and I cant wait to see what you do with it all.

Well done again.

Edit* Just thought I would bob back on and say that I liked the demo.
The idea of homing enemy shots is nice, and also the red/green marker and the flash-the-ship-and-you-cannot-get-killed-for-a-few-seconds routine works too.

I will email you a few things you may be able to use while your designing this game....Good luck with it all.

Update 8/24/04: New demo uploaded. You can now upgrade up to 5 lasers. It's slightly more possible to win.

Things to do today: Add in shields and hull strength, that way you don't die instantly when hit by a laser or bullet, only when hit by an enemy ship. Allow you to buy extra lives, devise a better money system than to divide your score by 2 at the beginning of the menu, lol.

ya maybe you should put the kitty in there so it's another "camio" appearance of that cat...make sure you use object smoothing though...or it looks horrible

It's not based off the movie Aliens, it's just called Aliens for now... I didn't even realize people might think that when I decided the name... Hmmm, maybe I'll change it.

Update 8/24/04: I finished the health bar! It looks pretty dang cool IMO... What it does is when your hurt it slowly decreases the health bar until it reaches your current health. And then, when you die or your health increases, it make the health bar gradually longer until it reaches full health.

EDIT: The shield bar is done now too! Now I can start to add in some cool upgrades, such as shield upgrades, hull upgrades, and shield restore items, hull repair items, things like that

I think what it is is wakehosting... They seem to go down occasionally, then come back up... But anyways, thanks for your comments! You can now buy extra lives, and I'm working on the shield and health increases now.

Hi,
Looking good, you've made some great progress.

I'm working on a similar game (X-Type) but I'm no where near as finished as you, just got a moving ship and scrolling background. I was just wondering if you using a system where, if you fire a shot you have to wait till that shot has hit something or gone off screen before you can fire another, or every time you hit the fire button it fires, so if you cpnstantly hit the fire button you can have loads of shots streaming towards the enemies.

I have it set up so that it has to hit something or go off screen before you can shoot again... Well, that's not quite it. What happens is it goes off screen or hits something, then starts a timer, and after a few seconds you can shoot again.

The reason people related it to Aliens as in Xenomoph, acid spilling snakes/dragons like creatures is becasue that logo looks EXACTLY like the Aliens logo with the glowing "I"

Update 8/25/04: I added in bombs today. They home in to the center of the screen, then blow up!


I'll make the graphic look better later, and I'll make it run faster, as right now it just scales one of the sprites to get huge, lol.

Things to do today: Add in a new weapon, I want to make a weapon that is a missile and homes in on the nearest enemy. Then I want to make that weapon able to have 5 of these homing missiles, for ultimate destruction! After that I think I'm gonna be done with the survival mode... I think I'll move on to a two player version then.

I got homing missiles done!!!


The white orbs are the missiles. I'll get a new graphic as soon as possible.

These were the hardest weapons so far, because first of all, they shoot out one by one until however many you shoot at a time are out.

Secondly, they have to find the closest enemy and move towards it, but if that enemy goes of the screen then they have to find the next closest one.

It wasn't easy, but it's done! It's not exactly the prettiest yet, it's a bit jerky and the movement code wants to be redone so that it moves faster depending on how far they are. But I'll get to that

Update 8/26/04: I added in the boss! Once you kill him the survival game is over. You can kill him and win, but he doesn't explode and doesn't fight back yet. He's not gonna be easy, but in my experience that's probably a good thing. Here's a screeny.
