OK, I have been spoiled with a 10MBPS cable modem, and now I am moving to a new area of the state that does not have cable or DSL. My question is, how can I still get decent speed while surfing using dial up.

Cheers

You're limited to 56kbps, so be prepared for a large drop in speed with nothing you can really do about it! No matter what some software packages out there might proclaim, a modem is just a modem and will only ever go as fast as it can handle. Make sure you use a good ISP.

Well, I have a satalite dish, for TV, so what would be my options there?? And money is not an issue at the moment.

Also, would it be possible to get a dial up modem that is faster such as 128kbps or faster??

There's no such thing as a 128k modem, sorry - you can dual-band some modems (use 2 phone lines and aggregate the channels, but it's still only 56k, just times 2). Your only other option MIGHT be ISDN. Your TV sat is useless for Internet comms, forget the idea totally, its way too expensive.

Half way between ADSL and dialup. About 128kbps.

ISDN is a digital version of your phone line, you can dual-bond them (the base rate of 64kbps) to 128kbps and they're digital, so they are "always on" like cable. Used to be "the thing" to own before ADSL came about and still used widely for back-up circuits, etc. Talk to whoever your new ISP is going to be.

Cheers,

Rich

You can get one-way satellite internet cheaply enough. This means you can get quick downloads, but all uploads etc still go through your modem, so you'll need an account with a dial-up ISP aswell. Search around for satellite providers, you can get it for as little as 16.50 a month (I would give you the link but I cant remember the website for that particular company)

Thats ISDN Basic Rate Interface(BRI). Primary Rate Interface(PRI), which is better, is 23 B channels in the states, which is the same as a T1 connection (from memory its 1.545Mbps), tad faster than ADSL. In the UK and Australia, its 30 B channels, wich is the same as a E1 connection (2.048Mbps i think)

EDIT: Sorry to be a smart arse, but i'm doing my CCNA as we speak

Nobody explained the acronym! Integrated Services Digital Network.

Unless you're right out in the sticks, you still might be able to get ADSL. You just need to be within 5 miles of your local exchange, with your local exchange upgraded. Don't discount it until you do some research, because you might find most of the area you are in are without broadband, but your local exchange has been upgraded. There are also wireless services these days that operate in large areas that are without conventional line based broadband. In my village, we are broadbandless (too far away from the exchange) but can get it wirelessly through a wireless router network which connects to a central backbone somewhere. A similar thing might be operating where you are, but chances are probably slim.

However, one sure fire way to work quicker than dial-up is to use carrier pigeons, smoke signals, runners, or small japanese flag signal boys. All are about a million times quicker than dial-up *KICKS HIS FRICKEN MODEM*

Thank you all for your help. I would appreciate some suggestions for places in New York that offer wireless broadband, I have searched to no avail. I cant get cable or DSL because I am 12 miles into the woods.

I worked for DirecTV which offers Sattelite Broadband. You could get 756k downstream, but you still have to have dial-up for upstream, so it will run at 28k . It is alright, I had it for a year or so. What sattelite do you have? DirecTV or Dish Network or a local provider? If it's DirecTV, they call it DirecWay.
