I have been learning more and more as I begin to work with 3D, that a quality texture editor is a must. Paint becomes incredibly time consuming to do any form of shading and highlighting for even simple objects.

Looking around I see PaintShop Pro seems to be a favorite, however, this is an incredibly expensive program (I was told 700$Can) and I simply can't afford it. I would like to know if there is a cheaper program that can make textures?

I don't need to have the best quality, heck, I've been using paint up until this point. I really just need something that can blend, highlight, shade and can alter alpha values (.png?). While I could make my own, I'd rather not spend three months making a program if I could buy it for under 80$...

I need to make textures for character models not just world levels so I don't need one that can, lets say, make cloud textures for a skysphere but can't do simple blending and such.

Is this possible? Up until now all I hear is PaintShopPro this and PaintShopPro that... I know some of you may have deep pockets but I do not. If possible I'd like to just get 1 program not 3 or 4 for slightly different tasks.

Thanks in advance.

700 is more like Photoshop's price,
unless you get 5or6 which are like the price of Paint Shop Pro, then you pay like a hundred bucks for an up grade to creative suits (the newest edition) and save hundreds of dollars, I'll probably do that my self someday...

70? Well thats certainly more reasonable...

I was looking at the texture maker software featured in the site. Has anyone tried that? Is it good?

GIMP! The only problem is that if you get a plugin, you have to compile it from the source....

But it's free!

Whats GIMP?

Anywhere I can try it out? I am not big on plug-ins unless there required, so it might suit me well. Can you give me a link ion stream?

Texture Maker is more for making well...textures, not for painting skins on a UV (where you have to do shading and stuff)

I use Paintshop Pro 8.1. I really love it. IMHO it can do EVERYTHING photoshop can do, only for 10x less money, and maybe 2-3 more steps. Litterly, Photoshop tools can be done by using a few Paintshop Pro tools, meaning you can customize it a bit more using PSP. I dont know if i Want to spend about 600 more dollars just for an extra 2 steps o_O

GIMP is free, and I hear good things. You might want to check that out as well

Of course, if you DO have the $$$ to dish out for PS, go for it
