Yes, any use of PS2 (or Xbox, or Gamecube, or even PC and all others) except playing the original disc in the original console is illegal. You can keep one back-up copy of a game you own.

And yes, it is possible to copy PS2 games. Many, many people do it. Does it not seem kind of funny though, asking how to copy copanies games on a forum made for game makers?

Please see this rule:
"Do not involve or advocate illegal activities (including piracy)"

This is piracy.

DO NOT PUT THAT ON YOUR SYSTEM!! Many new games are coming out that will detect that on your PC, even if you have deleted it. Then, new games will not run! Painkiller was one of the first, but many companies are starting to hop on the band waggon!

Technically wouldn't it not be piracy since it's his "one back-up copy" ?
(if he owns the game first that is)

I think you are right, Dark Coder. You can have a back-up of PC software, but not console games. They changed this due to the obvious mis-use of back-ups, not to mention that a console, the way you buy it from the store, cannot play back-ups. So, it was repealed.

I highly doubt that, because that's illegal. Just like windows refusing to open media files because you've got winamp/realplayer installed.

Apparently, it's not illegal as long as they put a warning on the system requiremets. It's either Painkiller or Far Cry, but I think it's Painkiller. I'll find the article in the game mag I read it in.

I can't find reference to that but I think that that could be both a good thing and a bad thing. It's good because it would stop piracy but it would be bad because if you were using it to legally make a backup or using it to test stuff (although that would be the exception rather than the norm).

Anyways, yes you can copy PS2 games but they tend to be a hassle to use depending on how the copies are made.

It might stop casual copying but the check will be removed by pirates just like the cd check. Then when someone makes a choice betweeen the pirate version and the legit version it just ends up as another reason to get the pirate copy.

I would only want to buy games anyway. Its not like they are that expensive and it doesnt even matter if they are because its a ton of work to make games and they deserve it.

Copying Console Games is illegal. PERIOD.
Sorry but open up your manuals and read the EULA they have in them. I have no games which are not on the PC which mention being legally allowed to copy the game even for backup means.

And I don't have a small library of games here.

Q- Can you copy Gamecube games?
A- Erm... This is still out on debate actually. Although yes I can say you can copy a Gamecube game from your GameDisc to your PC.
There are NO working emulators to test if it actually works, and there is currently no way to put it back onto the GameCube itself.
I doubt you will ever see Pirated GameCube games.
The format used is Panasonic DVD-RAM, however it uses an extra layer which causes PC drives (even those which support the format) not to read it, and the GameCube requires that hidden layer.

The only way to do it would be to heavily modify your GameCube to accept standard DVD-RAM discs.
Problem with that option is actually, well i'll let you look up the price of them.

For the PS2 & XBox, yeah you can... But you need a Modded Console.
Copied games won't work on them, I've tried this a good number of times. I could explain a way around it, but if you want to know find out for yourself.

Personally i back up all of my games because i think my brother plays frisbie with mine due to the number of scratches they get.
Oh and if you have the chance I'd STRONGLY suggest upgrading your PS2 DVD Lazer. Even if you don't plan to copy games for backup means, the damn things lazer is some of the most poorly constructed hardware i've ever used. (and i've used SiS)

If you have a ps2 harddrive there is a company that makes software that will allow you completly copy your ps2 games into the harddrive called (HD Loader), then you could make a mirror onto another harddrive its completely legal to do for games you own and at the time i saw the article only 4 games in the whole ps2 library didn't work. Although they said you could also rent games from a video store and copy them as well even though it is illegal to do the software is still on the market last i heard of course you could still only play them on your ps2 but could make quite a collection from renting and copying, it was in last months issue of playstation magazine.

You must live in the US as here in Europe they cost an arm and a leg. 60€ for the things. They should make games cost 20€ each then I could buy about 10 a year instead of 3 or 4.

A bargain at 900000€ second hand

I buy most of my games pre-owned or part exchange, that way I get cheap games and clear out my cabnit thingy that holds them all.

Yes, I get pre-owned games as well, even though I do live in the States. There are a lot of people on this forum who want to join the Video/Computer Game industry (myself included, after a lot of school), and I think it is a slap to their faces to talk about pirating games here. There are forums that are made for that topic if you so desire to discuss it.

I have just always marveled at the fact that we are on a software programming forum and people would ask questions about pirating games. I've said it before, and I'm sure I will be saying it again. It just doesn't make sense!

To me, that is like going to Church and asking if any body knows where to pick up a prostitute. You will most likely not a get a warm response.
