I was wandering through msdn.com and I stubled onto the visual studio .NET 2005 section of the website. And out of no where I find betas and express editions of Visual Studio .NET 2005. On the web site Visual Studio .NET 2005 pro beta 1 is only for MSDN Subsribers, but I look on and on about the express editions of the individual Visual Studio .NET languages, and all I see are.

Quote: "Are the Express Edition products free?

We have not announced pricing and licensing and will not do so until next calendar year. For the time being, we can tell you that the Express Editions will be low-cost and will continue to be easy to acquire.
"

Now with this I go all over the site in a frantic to see if it is true, and I cannot find anywhere where it says that their is a catch of some sort.

Could someone confirm what I see? Please!! I am going berserk at the thought of a lightweight visual studio .NET 2005 express edition for nearly free.

Sorry, out of my excitement I forgot to post the web links. Here they are.

The main website: http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/

The faq section of that site: http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/faq/default.aspx#vbasic

The Visual Basic Express Edition: http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/vbasic/default.aspx

And if this has been put in the forums before, please forgive me.

Yes, but note they are betas and therefore aren't finished as yet. I've downloaded them all and noticed them to be rather buggy, expecially in the debugging and compiling area.

[Edit:
And like most microsoft betas, they'll probably expire soon after the product has been released ]

Buggy as in sometimes you can't save your files, can't get to the form design wizard. simple compile errors etc...

It's a beta so that you can test it out, find what bugs there are (isn't hard) and report the bugs to microsoft, so really if you're hoping to actually do some development on this, it's pointless.

[Edit:

Any yes, you can try it out, but as I say it'll probably expire in the near future and you'll be left with either

1) A copy that doesn't work
or
2) An incedibly buggy copy

So if you think about it, you're better off just getting a student copy, that's if that applies to you. ]

Do you get anything in return for helping Microsoft beta test the software?

No, not with this product.

If you are a registered MSDN subscriber you sometimes get a copy of the final product in advance.
