Still might be worthwhile to write a very simple one. I haven't written a complete one myself, but I'm working on it.

Basically you have 4 main pieces to it.

Index
--Forum
----Threads
------Posts
--Forum
----Threads
------Posts
etc.

All you have to worry about it organizing everything and working with MySQL, or your database.

Then you can get fancy with registration pages, member pages, post counts, profiles etc.

I'd say anyone could write a decent forum in 1 months time if they stick with it.

But after he writes it, there is no use for it. I say, in a month, you can write a commercial-quality game.

For php download the .chm help file from http://www.php.net/download-docs.php
For mysql download the manual from
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/

Here is the forum I am currently writing. Started writing it on 6 sept. You can't post yet and there are no posts so no real point in going there.

While we're at it...

Try Campbell's Chunky Noodle Soup. It's just like mom used to make! Until we stole the idea and copyrighted it.

Also make sure you drink Coca-Cola, the taste OF TOMMOROW! Now contains slightly less acid!

Get the movie Agent Cody Banks 3: Mission to Atlantis! Ebert and Roeper call it "a movie!" The New York Times say it's "a ball of wax for the whole family!" Get the DVD for 260 hours of bonus extras!

Another post for advertising, well, I wish I had advertising to do, but my host has been down for 2 weeks... It might have something to do with hurricane frances, as they said it has damaged some of their servers located in that area....

They originally told me it should be fixed in 2-3 days

@404 - Don't bother with perl, it is very outdated now and one of the most annoying languages I learnt. PHP does far more, is much easier to learn, is constantly updated and is supported by most servers.

you cant view PHP files on your computer without a server of some kind, use dbspot

my forums getting better , it now lets you post (please dont if your not a user) and im sorting out the dates, i cant get login to work (the global wont stay)

i think that if you code a simple forum its a good project but its not worth it if your not going to work in that field or use it somewhere else
