Hi all,

For those of you sane enough to use Firefox, the 1.0 PR release was made live today. It seems even faster than the 0.9.x range which is good. No issues with any sites, quite a few nice changes (I like the way the URL bar changes colour on SSL sites).

XML Inspector fixed, but sadly most the Extensions including the life-saving Web Dev 0.8 don't work, so will have to wait for upgrades to those.

No surprise, that happens pretty much every release. Still it usually doesn't take long for them to get updated.

lol its almost the same as IE on the serface but better (i had an old version when i had DSLinux on a old laptop)

it *looks* slightly similar to IE considering i have always used IE and some of the features are similar, yet FF beats IE by far

i think its faster on cached pages but slower on normal pages, when i started it up it seemed slow at loading the forum but now its all fast

I'd say Firefox crushes IE, especially with the fact that skins can be changed. Not openeing a seperate version of Ie for the theme.

Skins are irrelevent.

I can only see that getting to be a problem on pre-XP/2000 machines (but then no-one should have any of those anyway). Grouping on XP is very useful.

yeah in the same way that X11 looks like WinAPI or GTK i suppose.

Outside of Windows, Firefox is a good 3rd Party Choice.
On MacOSX, nothing beats iBrowser/Safari.
Windows... hmm well it's a toss up really, sure FireFox has all the features which IE should have, but it isn't *as* quick even though it does come closer each build it still isn't there.
There's also the compatibility factor with Microsoft Standards that it lacks, as well as it's Macromedia Flash layering is very annoying.

You have to really weight up for Windows what you feel is best, especially now with Explorer's security lock down features in Service Pack 2.

FireFox is a great browser, but it wouldn't take much for someone to take Microsoft Explorer technology and create something close to FireFox in terms of features.

Worth checking out, and worth having on your system. But I don't think it will ever replace Explorer as my main browser.

Firefox is better than IE in so many ways--- including my favourite feature, tabbed pages! Yes I know other browsers used tabbed browsing, but Firefox is just so graceful about everything. Trust me, if you go back to using IE after Firefox, you'll wonder why you ever used IE in the first place. I've been using Firefox for nearly a year and I won't be switching for a long time

i've been using it since it was Fire... erm damn i can't remember actually. there was one before Firebird i'm sure there was...
well anyways, not changed from IE in like a decade, no reason to start now.

Konquor is pretty nice - much faster than Firefox, and probably slightly quicker than IE

That one was called Phoenix. Although from your remarks on these forums (Firefox not using Windows API for menus and toolbar) I very much doubt that you've been using it since then.


On my system (and many other systems obviously as well as in reviews) Firefox is faster than IE. But more important (to quote Rich):

ahemm...soem people like the added addition of skin choice for their browser. But I have to say Firefox does have other reasons for being good like built in pop up stopper, and the ability to open up other files you've downloaded on it if yuo need to find them easily, it's a great browser in my opinion.

Maybe it's just my messed up spyware-ridden computer, but for me Firefox loads pages faster than IE, cached or not.

Does on my computer too. There's something wrong with IE's loading/display time, though the download speeds are obviously identical. Firefox is just better coded.

It's nothing to do with the themes support, the built-in RSS reader, the decent Bookmark management, the skinable interface, the extremely powerful API you can use to code it with, the fact it IS faster at rendering web pages than IE, the tabbed browsing, the intelligent XML parser, the superb JavaScript debugger, the neat downloads manager, the fact its not prone to ever security hole / virus going and the fact it uses LESS memory than IE does, even though IE is built into the goddamn OS!

The simple reason why Firefox works for me is that it renders web pages CORRECTLY. It adheres to web standards and has vastly superior CSS support than IE. It does it properly.

I wouldn't expect most of you to appreciate that fact, you're not building web sites all day, every day. But for those who are you'll probably sympathise with me on why IE is so bug-ridden in its HTML rendering core that Firefox is like a breath of fresh air. You don't need hacks to make pages render correctly.

The only difference I would like is that the forum's code tags work in firefox like they do in IE, so that you can select a piece of text, click on the button and it gets encapsulated in the tags, if that is possible.

the only bad thing that i have found is the ctrl+scroll bit, because i am using a laptop it took me 10 minutes to get it to the correct size, IE limits the minimum size, but overall i agree with Rich

i keep having trouble with the codeboxes too, i know that this isn't a problem with firefox itself but rather the forum.

because invision (our boards) have the same tag stuff and code opening... they work fine and dandy.

Most boards use "document.selection" (IE only feature) for this and IIRC this forum, too. There seems to be no other way to get the range of a selection.

Gah, I hate grouping, I disabled it straight away. It adds one click too many just to change a window.

I went back to IE after using FireBird for several weeks, but quite a time has passed that I may be willing to give FireFox a go now... we'll see.

The only problem is that you build websites for everyone to view, not just yourself. So although it'll look like it's supposed to for you (through FireFox), there's still the other half of the users who won't so you'll end up having to modify your code anyway.

Firefox won't run.
I deleted all firefox folders and deleted all folders with the text "Mozilla" from my registry.
I got 0.8(the first one I installed) to run.
First it tells me that my plug-ins are outdated and suspended.
Then I click "Finish" or "OK" or "Next"(Can't remember which).
Then nothing happens!
Firefox starts running in the background as a process(Uses 11MB memory and 0 CPU usage).
(And once while I was using 0.8, I edited a config file and it caused it to run in the background)

tell ya something thats truely driving me insane with FireFox right now...
the message box is like half the width of the screen, even more annoying is the face that the actual typing area is about 3/4 of what it should be.

o_O god knows what's happened between versions cause i'm sure .9 didn't do this

gah, im working on my dads website and the link hover doesnt work in firefox but does in IE + i checked my site with similar code and that works

You mean the code snippet thingy? That didn't work in Firefox until a kind user provided some changes to the script.

I think the Codebox problem is that when you highlight text and click the "code" button, it doesn't put the tags at the start and end of the highlighted text like it does in IE. Instead, it just places the first tag at the end of the selection, which is kind of annoying.

Agreed. That is probably the only problem with this site. I wonder if there's a proper JavaScript fix for that? (there must be)
