It was christmas man, be patient, most folks are too full / drunk / hung over / giddy to be on these forums.

Now, for my comments. It's certainly better than the boxes you posted before. Definitely a step in the right direction. A wireframe in those views would be helpful.

hey uh Homie, why don't you try working on the model a little more before expecting comments. i don't mean to be rude or anything, but if we see more progression between the things your doing it would be easier to figure out what you are going for. try making the rest of him next.just use the same techniwues you used for the legs on the arms.

Heh, yeah I'm using 3D Studio Max 7. Got around to licensing it while I was away though

been having a great time with the family, so yeah not been around heh..
can't remember who to make the .max backwardly compatible.

I'll see about taking some screenies; if i have the time.

You don't necesserily have to box model, I never have. Have you tried cylinders? - like a 7 sided cylinder in sections, maybe 7 sections as well, then you vert edit that into the shape of an arm or a leg. I tend to work like that in sections then UV map, then put it all together.

box modelling is simple... just get your box, right-click->Convert to Mesh (you do this through the quad-menu as you can see it in the contruction history which you'll need later when you get more advanced), then open 'Edit Geometry' in the Edit Tab and use 'Cut'

you then just hack away in the 3D view. You'll see some lines on the model which you can then goto vertex mode and change the position of the vertices to give it a smoother look.
kinda busy atm to sort things out.

@IHG: Have you checked out my thread? I have a really good character model you can study:
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=46167&b=3

{EDIT:}Do you happen to have Milkshape, IHG? If so, I can help you work with that. I've never been too good at 3dsMAX .

Cool Mr underhill that looks good.. so how exactly did you do it?

No sorry i dont have MS3d but I have used it before and I think I know how to do most of its stuff in 3ds max.

Thanks

Thanks, IHG!
For the basic body structure, all I did was follow a really good tutorial at:
http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/benmathis/benmathis_1.asp

It's not modeller specific, but I think the guy used 3dsMAX in that tutorial.
It also helps to be able to modify and polycrunch free models from 3dcafe and other places and attach them to your model.
I know its kind of cheating, but for those really tough parts (hands and head, for instance) it can be a real lifesaver, and can
actually look really good if you know what you're doing.

Yeah I know that tutorial... but where I got stuck was on welding the guy together... should I extrude the cylinder (didn't work previously), or do I make a separate leg and weld? Thanks

Definitely separate cylinder + weld.
That way you get a full cylinder to work with instead of a split cyliner.

OKay I'm having some problems with the leg. So.. I made a torso, and I made one leg, separate cylinder. It lines up with the torso in front and side viewports.. but it just doesnt line up in perspective! I can't for the life of me, figure out why!
