Strata Works Full Release
http://www.wendigosoft.com/swnet_full/SW_Full.zip

Strata Works Public Beta Link - http://www.wendigosoft.com/projects.html

Hey everyone. I've been working on a program ever since the release of the new Advanced Terrain plug. As can be seen, I haven't been the only one. Anyways, I'm about ready to send out a beta of the LITE version of Strata Works. It was actually made in Visual Basic, but was designed with the Dark Basic Advanced Terrain Generator in mind.

Here's an example of the quality of work it puts out (1024x1024):
http://www.geocities.com/djpeterson83/screenshots/StrataWorks1.jpg

Mind you, this is in JPEG format and Strata Works pushes out lossless Bitmaps so JPEG artifacts aren't an issue.

I'm developing a Standard and a Lite version of Strata Works. The Lite will have most of the things that the Standard will have, but with some exceptions and a few limmitations. Here's a list of what is currently supported:

-Renders photo realalistic looking topographical landscapes
-Easy to use interface. With the click of a few mouse buttons
you can have a wide variety of varrying terrains
-Create a terrain from desert climates, to snowy-alps climates,
to alien worlds!
-Makes use of Strata, Detail, and Plateau maps to build a variety
of terrains
-Built in topographical averaging for smoother landscapes
-Import your own Height, Strata, Detail, or Plateau maps!
-Build any size terrain you need (512x512 LIMIT IN LITE)
-Built-in rotation for DBP Advanced Terrain compatability
-Built-in lightmapping system
-Manipulate sunlight color and normals and ambient light coloring
-Create virtually a limmetless number of pointlights (MAX 10 IN
LITE)
-Built-in texture baking
-Export height maps and topographical maps
-Export light maps (NOT IN LITE)

Features to come:
-Built-in heightmap editor (NOT IN LITE)
-Built-in "Topography Tweaker" for creating paths, roads, compounds,
extra folliage, or anything else you may need (NOT IN LITE)
-Pre-test so you can see what your map looks like before you use
it in your game (NOT IN LITE)

Well, I've almost got it ready for BETA download, so bare with me. Anyways, I thought I'd give a GUI shot of it so you folks can see kinda how it works. I will hopefully be adding in a toolbar for repetitive tasks such as Topography building and Pre-testing (as well as standard "New", "Open", "Save", etc...). Here's the UI shot:

http://www.geocities.com/djpeterson83/screenshots/strataworks_ui1.jpg

I was going to disable the Pre-test in the Lite version, but was in a good mood so decided to leave it in. It just has a little "Please Register"-like messagebox after you use it. I just finished the Registration Key system and disabling things for the Lite (not too much and is still very functional), PLUS Once I get the Beta Lite up, for a limmited time, height maps will only be disabled to 1024x1024 instead of the normal 512x512 (the full version is limmitless). If you are curious about how much I plan on selling Strata Works, I'm thinking in the range of $10 to $30. I don't want to gouge anyone. That isn't right, plus for hobbiests, the Lite version is probably good enough.

Any feedback or thoughts on Strata Works would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

NOTE TO THE CURIOUS: If you are wondering what I was playing in WinAmp at the time of the screenshot, it was LinkinPark, but I don't remember exactly what song.

Current Projects: Verious things right now. Lots of utils for game making. Hopefully something solid soon.

I'm pretty much at a public beta stage and am dissapointed to see that not many people are responding to Strata Works. I would love to send out a demo version of the Lite, but don't really have web-space available for it. Anyone got any ideas? I assume I'll be getting much more feedback once people have tried it. Projected shadow mapping is now available for the full version of it (and the initial BETA Lite probably) so here is a pic to show it off (map "Bullseye"):

http://www.geocities.com/djpeterson83/screenshots/StrataWorks2.jpg

It would be greately appreciated if someone could point me in the right direction for low-cost or no-cost webspace. Thanks!

First off, thanks a bunch for the responses. I was starting to get worried .

Peter, I've currently got a .ZIP of it that ranges at about 10.0 MB (is actually about 9.9, but I got a couple more tweaks to do on it). If you could host it, that would be awesome! I'm also looking into Yahoo! business (the starter is only $11.95 a month) which comes with a lot of great perks (2.0GB storage, 25GB transfer rate, my very own WendigoSoft.Com domain, etc....). Though $11.95 really isn't that much, I got some other expenses I need to keep in mind, so even if you could just temporarily host a beta download, that would be awesome! Thanks again!

-David "TheWendigo"

PS - I'm planning on giving away some Keys to unlock all the features to it, so the above 3 responders will get FREE KEYS!! once I get a copy of Strata Works up. I'll need your email addresses to give em to you. The keys will be good throughout the development stage of it threw the final release, and in the event that the key code changes, I'll email you guys new keys to replace them. Thanks again!

Sorry for the late reply (I seem to say that alot). Strata works textures currently only support .bmp, but there is nothing keeping you from resaving it to another format in a paint package. There also is currenly no support for exporting a mesh, however it is planned (probably .x format since it is universal).

As far as the demo and retail goes. I've been writing it in VB6 and found out a major delima. What I thought would transfer enough of the runtime information actually didn't. hopefully i will get this dealt with soon enough. i also need some webspace as I mentioned.

As far as getting the beta up, I would project within the next week or two (but I hope I don't get DB teamy about it - "new patch in two weeks"...5 months later ).

Wendigosoft has moved. I've traded in my old Geocities account for a real life domain name from Canaca. You can now visit WendigSoft at [href]www.wendigosoft.com[/href] where I will finally be posting the BETA LITE (and full version with key) or Strata Works, plus soon after Height BETA. Links in posts should be updated soon, however, do not follow the links in my sig as until after this post. This part will be posted in all WendigoSoft WIP posts.

It's out! Check it out guys! (top of the page)

NOTE: Make sure you have the Visual Basic Runtime libraries (might work without, but probably not)! The best way to know if you have this is if you have VB6 installed or not. It may not work otherwise until I figure out what is going on. I've only had a problem with the DLL's on one computer, but that doesn't mean much.

To all of you whom might be very excited about Strata Works, just updating this thread to let you know it hasn't been forgotten! I've got 3 major projects going now and believe it or not Strat Works isn't the last one on my mind. Height is! But since I haven't said much about Height... it's all good!

Oh, did you 4 get your Strata Works keys? (GamezMan, Peter_, Mitchell, ALPHA)

Well good news. I got a cool new height tool now. I call it the Lock Point or Lock Tip tool. How it works is by instead of adding or blending pixel data, it locks the height to the brush size. In-effect, what that does is makes it to where if you were to draw a line vertically, you would end up with a long mountain that came to a tip. Alone, this tool isn't hugely useful, but in conjunction with the Lower-Terrain tool, I was able to make a very realalistic mountain I couldn't have done in anything else other than maybe Paintshop or Photoshop.

In comparison:
-Raise and Lower Terrain creates kinda knolly hills or hills that ultimately end with a flat top or sink.
-Level terrain creates plateaus
-Lock Tip/Point creates mountains

It's really cool, unfortunetely, I won't be able to get an update out for a bit. I also just had a thought to see if I can get knoll tool built. You probably have notice that StrataWorks ends up creating cones. That's all good, but it would be nice to create knolly hills too. Think I'll get to that while i have some spare time!

Okay folks! With the unfortunate cancellation of DOOP, I have had more time to focus on Strata Works and things are going quite well. I have a New Download and the next stage of Strata Works is so drastic, that Strata Works has been demoted back to an Alpha stage! Before I get into that here's what Strata Works does now:

Latest Update
-Height Editor
-Height Editor tools: Raise, Lower, Flatten, Lock Tip, Noise, Fill, Dropper, Random height
-Rewritten Strata Engine.
-Bilinear Rescale
-Invert Height map
-Height map now averages more correctly (still in the works)
-Faster saving and loading (new format saves and loads a bit quicker)
-Old projects backwards compatible
-Pretest now vertically scales double its normal size
-Pretest grass engine is rewritten. Looks more natural in some cases
-Pretest now has reflective water (warning: slow!) enabled by pressing 'W'

There is one very important bug to be recognized: do not add point lights to this version as it will crash the program! This bug does not affect sun light and ambient light. I hope to correct this issue in a few days.

Now, the rewritten Strata Works will have 2 major modifications to topography: a new custom layer system, and location masks.

Custom Layers
Custom layers will allow you to create any number of layers of any type in any arrangement. Simply click on New Layer and after a quick setup, a new layer will be added. This system will also allow for a future Layer plugin so you could create your own layers.

Location Masks
Using a bit mask (size mask will probably 1 to 8 bits - in debate) a layer will only draw to a certain area of your map, so you could create grass lands in one part of your map and snowy mountains in another. This will also replace the Topography Tweaker (which never was implemented) which will ultimately make it better.

Lite Limmitations
Once the next Strata Works comes out, the Lite version will be limmited as follows:

-The above state limmitations in previous posts
-3 Topography layers maximum
-No Layer masks
-No Plugin support

The new Strata Works rewrite won't be out for a while, as I said. As for the latest upload, I hope to be adding an emergency upload soon enough to fix the point light issue, but there are no guarentees on that. Until then, enjoy the new update!

Well, all is exceptionally well with how Strata Works 1.2 Alpha (doh! forgot to change the title in the screen shots!). I've compiled a list of changes and have an excerpt from the version control file:

I do not have an update, yet, of the new Strata Works 1.2 as it has not yet been thouroughly tested, but I have created some more screen shots mainly from the PreTest built in to show off its stuff. There are too many and they are too big for the image tags so I've just linked to them, instead. I hope you all like them!

Thanks MikeS, though those shots were for the pretest, the pretest is actually a heavily stripped down version of Height which I might have mentioned I am working on here and there in the forums. It (Height) will probably end up a full source release just like DOOP ended up. The main power of Strata Works, as can be seen, is the beautiful topography it generates. As will be the case, the Strata Works Lite version is FREEWARE and can be downloaded at my site (link at top of post). The Lite version is a fully function version of the Standard, but with some limmitations. You can still load, save, and export height and topography maps, as well as due basic lighting (only 10 point lights and no projected shadows). There are other limmitations, but that's a good start.

As an update, actually more of an addendum to my last post, I am hoping to add a few more features never before seen to Strata Works (a set of features for mask layers), and after that, I hope to rewrite a lighting system that works as fast as the lighting system in FarCry. The lighting promises to be a bit of a challenge, but I'm up to it .

I am my own server, my home computer with broadband internet (roadrunner) and I'll let you host it if you want without upload limits or popups. Sorry if I didn't read any of the responses past the one where you said "I need webspace" but I was too excited. Even if you already have a server now, I'll still just host the download file or something.

Ohh yeah, I think i already said this but it looks amazing and keep up the good work, based on the screen shots, I'm sure your program is going to kick A$$

Thanks for the positive replies, guys. It really makes me feel like all the effort is well worth it!

@Antdizzle
No, you are not stupid at all. I probably just haven't been thinking too clearly about link posting. I've been linking to my projects page in case someone might find something else they would like off my site as well. I provided a direct link to the .zip below. [EDIT] - Oh my gosh! I'm such an idiot! I erased the link on my site by accident . Have that fixed in a second!

@SteveK
Thanks for the offer, but I've found some web space that works well for me. There aren't any ads (that I'm aware of), and I get more bandwidth than I'll ever use in a month.

NOTE: The following link is for both the LITE and STANDARD versions of Strata Works. I have given keys to a select few which will allow you to register Strata Works and unlock it's full potential. As I have written before, the LITE version is a fully function and FREE version of Strata Works, but has some quality limmitations. Without further ado, the link:

Well, it's coming along. Strata Works now has customizeable brushes, as in, you can load a bitmap to be your brush! I've been procrastinating a bit on masks as they are not only complicated to implement, but their structure is still in debate. There are pros and cons to both 8-bit and 1-bit masks. I started with the idea of using 1-bit, but now am leaning towards 8-bit. I have also decided that, if possible, to add a single mask layer to the LITE version. That way users can test them if they want to upgrade and also use a single mask for their projects (which should prove quite handy). I don't have any screen shots to show, unfortunetely, but I'm still hard at work! I'm having some brush bugs which have also stalled progress a bit.

I think I've seen this pop up every now and then. I've been trying to resolve it. I think it gives a fatal crash in the currently posted version. The next version won't crash, but it may throw an error at you - It'll be basically harmless then. Still trying to figure out what's causing it.

Hopefully I'll have the next version up within the next couple of days. Still plugging away!

Strata Works Update:
Coming along. Having some corruption with projects problems, but I hope to get that fixed today. Also, the new Alpha won't be out for a bit, but I hope to get it on the site by the end of this week or the beginning of next. I'll probably update this post later today.

Is there a way to test in DBPro the result of the modeling?

If you goto File>>Export Height Map, you can save a bitmap of your heightmap. Then goto File>>Export Topography Map and you can save the texture for your bitmap.

If you have the Free Advanced Terrain (ATE) Plugin from and for Dark Basic installed, you can use commands to load in the new maps for your new terrain.

It is also possible to do this with a matrix, however, I have no code available for that and there are a few tricks involved. I hope this helps.

More about Strata Works next Alpha LITE release:
I had some homework catching up to do so things had been a little slow, but I have almost got it finished and probably will finish today. This gives me more time to work on SW. Some of you may have noticed that the heightmaps that are exported are in 24-bit color. That's a little excessive and has been fixed in the next release. It now shoots out 8-bit grey-scale maps. I also hope to add a feature to shoot out 24-bit bitmaps which utilise every byte as a height component (giving you 16777216 different heightvalues instead of just 256), however this will be for use in other programs than DB, and/or custom wrote engines. As another note, for those of you not utilizing the free ATE, I will be writing a .X exporter for Strata Works, but this will most undoubtably not be in the next release.

Greate news! In a little while after I post this message, there will be a new update to Strata Works! This version allows a lot more flexibility with topography. You will now have the ability to have 256 (3 in LITE) different layers to which you can mix and match styles with. Also, this version has the Mask capability for each layer. This way, you can modify the mask so that layer will only affect certain regions. There's more! So here's a list:

Updates for 1.3:
-Topography now allows layers
-Layers can use 3 draw methods and various topography methods
-Layers have masks so you can specify exactly where you want a layer to affect
-Custom cursors are now available! Create your own cursors in a paint package and use them to build your terrain.
-A nifty toolbar has been implemented to speed up productivity.
-Heightmaps are now floating point based instead of integer based allowing more precision to work with.
-Resizing a map is slightly faster, but considering the new mask layers, the resize formula is dramatically faster!
-Bugs squashed (and probably some new ones reintroduced... email me if you find one!)

Also, you may be wondering why a version was skipped... well, because 1.2 was supposed to be the next big version, but there were so many bugs in it that I decided not to release it and fix all the bugs and add some new features for 1.3. Do note, that this version is still somewhate UNSTABLE, and even though a lot of bugs have been squashed and I can't find any major ones, it is still not tested to my liking. Save often! I'm not responsible for loss of work!

Important - For those of you have keys to the full version of Strata Works, I will be releasing a registerable upgrade to this download. [edit] to avoid spam, email removed [/edit]

Not bad, the link isn't working right now, but I saw it earlier. I hope to get another update out soon enough (everything should be backwards compatible as usual). I know at times I've been shooting these out like hot-cakes, but I really want the community seeing Strata Works the way that I see it, instead of a version or two back. Last update was huge with changes so sorry for the lateness. Next one shouldn't be so long.

Next up:
It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you do not create any layers that are topographic types "Greater Than" and "Less Than". The next patch will add more functionality to each layer which will allow you to set a bounds for that particular layer. What this means is that certain layers will only affect certain elevations. The default will, of course, be the entire map size. The reason I don't want you to use these layers is that they will become depricated and I cannot guarantee their compatability in next release. Sorry, I should have disabled them.

Okay folks bad news: Apparently the Pre - Test code got deleted! This can only mean but on thing: I need to rewrite the pretest code. As such, things are going to be delayed a bit, but suffice to know I am making the pretest even better!

Excellent program Wendigo. Can you do a tutorial for creating a good heightmap?
