The following are arranged from top to bottom. The more towards the top the software, the more it's used in the game industry(Just from my estimates).

I placed stars(*) next to the tools I've personally use or have trialed.
I placed Exlamations(!) next to the tools I really personally love to use.
I placed M's next to the tools that can be found very commonly in the movie industry or animation.
Question Marks(?) are tools I don't really know much about.
Anything in bold means it's suberb in that catagory.

[*]3DS Max http://www.discreet.com/
[?]Lightwave http://www.newtek.com/
[*]Softimage http://www.softimage.com/home/
[*M]Mayahttp://www.alias.com/eng/index_flash.shtml
[?]Houdini http://www.sidefx.com/
[*!]Truespace http://www.caligari.com/
[*]Cinema 4D http://www.maxon.net/
[M]Animation Master http://www.hash.com/

Well, that's my rating scale off the top of my head. You'll have to explore the links for more accurate ratings and features.

Goto 3dlinks.com and look around on one of the menu buttons. It takes you to a list of nearly every college for that sorta thing.

Well there are only a few big one's
3D Studio Max - Mainly for computer game (Unreal, Command & Conquer ect)
Maya - Mainly for movies (shark ect)
Lightwave - Use in both tv shows (7 days) and games (Doom 3)
but it is not as common as the others.
Of course there are many other softwares but this are the main ones.

And tell your friend that when it comes to modeling (and programming)
the software is not important but the experience for example
one of Doom3 modeler didn't know any software but trueSpace before
he start modeled in Ion storm with lightwave and look what a great models
there are in the game.
