I've been planning to make a simple 3D side scrolling game for my first project, but I was a bit lost as to how to make my levels... it seems that making a BSP file would be one way, but I don't know anything about editing BSP files. Do you use the Quake or Unreal Editors? Or could I simply make the level in 3DS Max... though then I wouldn't know how to handle the collision modelling.

So yeh I'm pretty lost, and I was just wondering the easiest way of making indoor levels for DBPro games. Thanks

See the sticky thread on top for info on (free) 3D editors. Or just use DeleD which is specifically designed for creating levels.

Use the free 3D modeller DeleD to get skilled in 3d editing! Visit http://www.delgine.com for more info.

Well, I have 3DS Max and I use Anim8or a lot. I just didn't know how to handle the collision modelling for a level. If I load the entire level as one .X file or .3ds file, how would the collision be handled? I certainly wouldn't want it to be per-polygon... I guess I really just don't understand collision and how it relates to an environment model.

Thanks

There's 2 options really, model in max then use NGC for collision detection (Nuclear Glory Collision) - which is not free but not expensive either.

Or...

Make the level in chunks and use your own box collision system or optimised collision - per poly collision might be doable if you limit your checks enough. Basically you'd only want to check collisions on objects that you had to, like within a certain range of the player.
