Well might as well start with the news form the last few weeks if nobody has read.

That was apparently hanging in the Vavle offices since they sent HL2 out to Vivendi in september. It is a Piniata pretty much.

This was the scene when they made HL1 gold a few years ago (seems so long dosen't it?). That was them breaking the piniata sending the signal that they're game was gold.

Now the other day, Gamespots rumor control reported this:

Quote: "Rumor #1: Half-Life 2 is gold. Really. No foolin'. Honest.

Source: If we told you, we'd have to kill you.

The official story: Both VU Games and Valve declined comment.

What we heard: Ever since the release candidate for Half-Life 2 was submitted to VU Games in mid-September, a piñata has hung in the lobby of Valve's headquarters. The plan: to bust the sucker open when the game achieved gold status. Earlier today, GameSpot learned from a locally based source that "the piñata has been broken." Further evidence of the game's completion came in a press release issued this afternoon touting the first review of "the entire game." Though nothing official has been announced yet, it appears the fat lady is at last clearing her throat.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus. "

That is located at http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/10/15/news_6110731.html. Now, if that report is true, that means that Half-Life 2 is gold, and expecting a 2 week to 6 month release. Obvioussly, there has been a whole "November 1st" date going around for a bit. That is also IIRC (not actually have reading the full article) what PCgamer had said for its release.

Now there is little doubt that it is going to redefine PC gaming, as there has rarely been a game to get this good of reviews. But do you think we are gonna see it with in a reasonable time. Or is it gonna be another long wait, while my preorder i just did a week ago (been playing CS: Source madly) collects virtual dust?

Only time shall tell i suppose.

I had a feeling that HL2 would kick Doom3 into touch, looks like it's gonna do just that. Looking forward to it (on XBox probably though, unless the demo tells me different (I can't see it being too playable on my PC).

I'm above minimal right now, and should be upgrading before xmas, so I'll probably grab the PC version first. I can run Doom3, but TBH I'm pretty bored with it already.

I got bored with DoomIII right after the fussy ran out (that buzz you get off a new game before you start to notice the bugs/faults/ommisions), Hell helped to redeem things for a short while, but the game was way too linear for a modern "ubergame", and I havent seen such scripted, no deviation/ right down the tracks stuff since Dragons Lair, and that was a serious flop as far as gamers where concerned despite the pretty laservision gfx.

Don't know if yall know this, but PC gamer had a world exculsive review of Half life 2, and gave it the exceptional score of 98% which is the second highest score in PC gamer history! Their Final comment was...

"Surpasses Half-Life in every way. Arguably the best game ever made.

"Highs: Everything, graphics, plot, gameplay. It's what experts have been predicting for this this medium.

"lows: Squadmates sometimes get in your way; low-res textures in huge outdoor scenes.

Is quoting a mag against the rules? If so delete this post, I didn't mean harm.

No it's not

I've read the whole review myself. I liked it as a review, but I can't say I trust PC Gamer. They gave Doom 3 only two less points, which is hilarious really.

Its gone through a few mags so far, i think 6.

Mostly in the UK, i belive PCgamer US is the only one to review it state side.

PC Gamer (UK) - 96% (Highest ever)
PC Format (UK) - 96% (Highest ever)
PC Zone (UK) - 97% (Highest ever)
PC Gameplay (NL) - 90%
PC Gamer (US) - 98% (Tied for Highest ever IIRC)

Apparentlly after reading the translated PC Gameplay review, they we're looking foward to HL2 Deathmatch, which is not the case. Other then that they seemed to love the game.

Here's what bothered me about the PC Gamer review, they say the lighting isn't a good as Doom 3. I don't know what they're smoking. It might not be 100% realtime dynamic lighting, but they have light bleeding and smooth shadows that achieve amazing effects Doom 3 wouldn't be capable of on steroids. It looks better light-wise. *shrug*

PC Gamer UK (which is realy bloody reliable) did give it 96%, but that is infact tied to the top with HL1 and Civ2. Incidentaly, the lowest mark the magazine ever gave was N/A (for BigBrother2) for being too bad even for a score.

they made Bigbrother1? thats almost as moronic as making a sequel , how can you make a game about a program that has no redeeming qualitys at all?, ultimate sad couch potato fodder, makes me mad they waste the electricity broadcasting that drivel, we could use that to power more PC`s <shouts off stage left> "MORE POWER IGOR!...THE NET CONNECTIONS STARTING TO FADE!!!" Doom 3 had very impressive lighting, which after all was the lack there of, It was totally dynamic, while HL2 is stuck using lightmaps (damn good ones though), well I just want to stick up for Doom 3 because It was an awsome game in my opinion, I was really sad when I beat it, I wanted more, same thing with Farcry which is probably going to be the closest thing to HL2 right now graphics wise.

by the way, why do U.K mags get such early reviews! Isn't valve a US based company?

Doom 3 disapointed me in the end. Same thing for 3/4's of a game, kill imp, kill spiders, run into dark room, more imps.

And that never ended. Good game, gameplay wise yes, but the level designs coulda used some work.

yeah I guess your right, is the U.K more PC oriented, or console oriented? Because the states are alot more console oriented, and it sucks because you get mags with like a tiny section in the back with like a few articles about PC games. DEATH TO THE CONSOLES DEATH TO THEM!

Unfortunately its heading towards consoles - which means it a few years there will be very few games for the PC (and probably few programmers too). But on the plus side, I can request higher wages...

Consoles are more popular and sell better everywhere, stupid as that is . It's quite possible that PC Gamer is the only magazine that reviewed it yet in the US because they paid even more money to be the only State-side magazine to get it yet. It's very hard to know what negotiations are going on behind the scenes.

It makes sense that console gaming is doing better than pc gaming. Consoles are cheaper than a pc, which makes it more available to the mass market, and games are more casual on the console, also appealing to the mass market. That's my guess as to why Halo has all this so-called "undeserved hype", because it's not HalfLife/Unreal material, but it was on a console and appealed to the masses. You'll also notice all the indie developers trying to make money are doing the typical flash puzzle/arcade games, because people can just go on the net, read the instructions, and play it.

Anyway, if I had money I'd have pre-ordered HL2.

To be honest I enjoyed Halo a lot more than HL, Unreal, in fact I'm trying to think of a PC game that engrossed me like Halo did. I mean - what about the first time you meet the flood in Halo? - you just don't get that level of action with PC games.

It's good to have a console and a PC, I'm a softie for games like Line of Fire and Battlefield, but Conflict Vietnam on the XBox - an FPS you can play with 4 players!, you gotta take your hat off to the work that must go into multiplayer modes, especially when your playing the same game with 1 - or 4 players. I spend quite a bit on games every month, like at least 2 titles usually, just whatever takes my fancy - this month it'll be Halo2 pre-order, and probably THUG2 - both on XBox, but that could be due to my PC spec .

Serious Sam did strenous modern action first, and better IMO. Halo's strength was its plot; the gameplay and presentation was near flawless, sure, but there are plenty of PC games like that too. Unreal Tournament comes to mind-- damn near flawless game. Ut2k4 too.
