We're building a MEMS plant at work, MEMS stands for Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems - and they're used right now for things like pressure sensors and system shut-off hardware, for example right now it probably takes a second or so for the power to leave a PC - that includes the processor. If you used MEMS technology, you could shut off power to a particular chip almost instantly - this would be for applications in power stations and nuclear plants.
The thing is - it could well be bacteria or microscopic organisms that cause the problems soon, imagine a tiny flea getting it's leg caught under a pressure sensor - then having to go looking for said flea
