I am posting this, not to cause friction between the various IDE developers, or get a "this is better than that" pissing contest going, but rather, to get a gauge of the community using alternate IDE solutions - Reason being? I need a new IDE for DBP, plain and simple. The mysterious memory crashes and what-have-you are maddening to the point of throwing my pc out the window! So before I do that I thought i'd post this.

So whats your favorite alternate IDE and why?

I will use the answers and who gave them to base my decision on a new ide. If you feel the urge to say "just download them all and try them all out" then I say thanks, but thats not what I asked.
Thanks to anyone who responds.

BLue IDE has an easy to use interface and is an on going project of RobK's (I think ). I use this editor all the time because of its conveniency. I am even trying to create an IDE in the DBP language that will look very much like Blue IDE, the program that I am making is called DarkBASIC Network IDE.

Blue IDE all the way!!

My alternate to the default IDE is Notepad. Although if someone can figure out how to hook DBP into Visual Studio .NET, I'd definately give it a whirl.

The latest version of Blue can be downloaded here:

http://www.robertknight.me.uk/files/darkbasic/blueide_rc4.exe

In my view the main advantages of Blue over the default editor, is the saving system. In addition to saving everything on save, it creates a backup each time you compile. If you want to "save" that particular version of the source in case you make experimental changes, just go into your project folder and rename the backup folder to "Backup <date>" for example.

The features I use the most are Goto Definition & Search For References which allow you to easily navigate around the source. Code Snippets are very handy too.

Oddly some of the minor differences really impact the usability. For example Blue has an "Open Project Folder" link which opens the current project's folder in Explorer. The function list in the original editor is displayed in the order the functions occur in the source code, Blue displays them in alphabetical order. The default IDE lacks a "Run Only" option. The original editor uses seperate windows for different source files, Blue uses tabs.

Anyhoo, I'm obviously biased, so ignore me. Twilight has quite a few of these features as well.

I use blue ide mostly because of,

open project folder - opens explorer window of the project file.
Switch between open source files with tabs.
save on compile
run only - runs the exe without recompiling
plugin info viewer - shows string tables of plugins, usefull for plugins without help or .ini
have lots of projects open at one time
Drop short cuts into the blueide/tools dir and you can run them from the tools->programs menu.
Shows arguments for user functions as well as built in functions in the status bar.

the default IDE sucks

I cant get blue to run, the latest version says "error 13 : type mismatch" when updating the keywords... and the IDE stops responding.

So its the normal IDE for me

Go to the folder where you installed BlueIDE and replace the blue.exe there with this one:

http://www.robertknight.me.uk/files/darkbasic/blue.exe

There is a bug with Non-English versions of VB runtimes which this corrects.

I use Blue IDE. However, my understanding is that RobK isn't doing any more development on it. This leads to a slight bugbear I struggle with and that is that the version of Blue I have does not like absolute paths - this is a compiler issue for Lee to deal with I understand. For some reason I can't get a workable compile running on relative paths. This means I am in the unfortunate position of developing with Blue and compiling with the default IDE.

Cheers

Philip

Hmm for the longest time I've prefered the default IDE but it keeps giving me some wierd error message everytime it compies (everything runs fine... just some wierd error message) and that bothers me after several compiles... so I've switched to BLUE IDE. So far its been ok, except it gives me a good deal of trouble sometimes when working with more then one dba file in the editor. Think ill try out twilight and see how it works with multiple dba files since none of them realy have seemed so far to had much luck with that field.

My favs are:

Twinno Brain Editor
Crimson Editor

Twinno Brain editor has functions for executing TorqueScript, 3dRad Code, and DBPro code (soon to feature DBC).

Crimson Editor has a general tools macro thing, you put in the program, parameters, etc. and it runs whatever, will also capture and display error messages.

Mine - DOOP . I like it cuz it's a completely different language with enhanced capabilities which can be emulated in DBP with its translator (WOOOOOHOOOOO!)

Blue would have to be the best TPE I've ever tried with Dark Basic Pro, so I'd have to choose that one.

i use blue religiously.

I've found that the keyword builder dies when there is an == in a keywords file where there should be a link to a help file.

change that to = = and it all works fine.

I hate the built in editor (on the demo which I've been using for the compo) because on my PC it just DOES NOT save no matter what I do :S

Thanks everyone for their insight. I decided to give the Blue IDE a try. I have just installed it and am tinkering with it...so far I like what I see - neat, tight, clear & concise - great job RobK!

I'll let ya know how I get on.

Thanks again
CR

*EDIT*: Q for Rob, save all? or does "save" equate to save all?

What I hate about BlueIDE is that if you minimize the help, it goes away.

The default editor is fine.

Yeah, also if your looking at the help and you click BlueIDE's code editor in the background, it disappears. That is very annoying.

A bug that bugs me with BlueIDE is that if you try to type speech functions from the enhancement dll package, it seems to crash. So if I need those commands I notepad that file, then the commands show in the editor but if I try to change them BlueIDE crashes.

I switched to Twighlight a while back, also tried BIDE, after the original IDE gave me all sorts of errors, and kept corrupting my Project files ( never had problems saving source though ).

I liked Twilight, but unfortunaly BIDE had a few bugs of it's own, and kept crashing out, so I stuck with T for a bit.

When Drake handed out Guy's last unofficial update of the default IDE ( on LLRTG for those of you don't have it yet ) I went back to the default, and haven't looked back

Jess.

Indeed it does

Although, I did notice ONCE, and ONCE ONLY that it crashed when I hit compile I beleive, but it had already created the .bak file, so all was well
