I have developed a software line called Blacksmith3D which allows you to both morph and paint (in true 3D) 3D models.

Currently, it is focused on the Poser market, but I am looking into making it as friendly to the game developer as possible.

So my I ask a few questions of the 3D Gamemaker community?

1) What file formats (for object files) are supported by 3D Gamemaker, and if there are multiple formats, which one is the most popular? Does it support the OBJ file format?

2) Blacksmith3D allows you to take an existing model (say a humanoid) and easily reshape it. You can also paint textures directly on the model. Would these features be useful to the typical user of 3D Gamemaker?

3) Approximately how many users of the 3D Gamemaker are there?

4) What sort of "FREE CONTENT" would the users of the 3D Gamemaker community enjoy, so I can offer them as promotions.

5) Is there a "free stuff" section of this web site where users can post and download free content? I would offer lots of free stuff for everyone to download.

Your input would be greatly appreciated,
Dave

Would it be cheaper than 99.95 for starters? This community would find the .X and .3DS the most useful file formats. Animation (using both limbs and bones) would be good too. Most peeps here don't even use 3D game Maker though, we mainly use DarkBASIC around here a scripting language, one that can do much more than the 3D GAme Maker so don't call it the 3D Game Maker community because it really isn't a community for that at all. There aren't many who use it here, there are some but not many.

3D Gamemaker Community = About 10
Dark Basic Community = Thousands

Youll be much more prone to get customers by targeting the DarkBasic/DarkBasicProfessional community, rather then the (rather unexistant) 3D Gamemaker community.

1) The most popular object formats are .x and .3ds
2) Id love to have a 3D Modeller with these features
3) Stated Above
4) People around here want free EVERYTHING I pay for quality, as do a lot of people around here who know the basics of economics.
5) Try 3D Chat...there really should be a Free Stuff section, Ill talk to Rich

Thanks for the post, your product looks great

If that was targeted at me RPGamer

I'd be willing to pay but for a low poly modeller I would pay a max of $50, not 100, it's not worth if you ask me.
Especially when there are other things I could spend that 100 bucks on.

You should be able to produce both .3DS and .X output, but definitely .X output if you're targetting the DarkBasic community.

I don't think there are a lot of 3D GameMaker users out there, but there are a LOT of DarkBasic programmers who are totally stumped and mystified (dismayed? yeah verily) by the cryptic interfaces of modeling packages such as GameSpace/TrueSpace, Milkshape, etc. Or, they're so turned off by high prices (3DSMax, Maya) that they can't even consider them. So a modeling/animation package with a simple interface would be cool. I wouldn't have much problem forking out $100 to $150 because I waste so much friggin' time pulling out what hair I have left when I look at 500 unlabelled GameSpace menu icons.

Also, you mentioned your current focus on the Poser market. IMHO, Poser isn't of great use to the 3D game maker. Any 3D content you create using their pre-packaged meshes (limbs, heads, expressions, etc.) is copyrighted and can't be distributed in a game.

Also, you can't create animations in Poser that can be saved in .X format, which would be most useful to a DB programmer/modeler. Poser has the best animation interface I've seen in my very young career as a 3D geek, but outputting .AVI animations isn't much help for a gamemaker

Poser's animation menu is about as easy to understand as it gets. I think if you emulated that for a user who wants to animate their own .X human, you'd have a winner. There is a downloadable demo on the Dark Basic Pro site that comes close. I think it's "3D character Maker". The interface is bare-bones (pardon the pun) and easy to understand. Pity it makes some very bad assumptions about your input model's scale. Make something like that which actually works and DBP programmers may beat a path to your door.

Thanks for the great info (please keep more coming).

I believe that the 3D painting feature in my software (can be purchased separately in the "Blacksmith3D - Paint" package) would be very useful for game developers.

http://www.blacksmith3d.com/blacksmith3D_paint_tileable_texture_tutorial.htm

The morphing software would be useful for taking an existing model (say a human man) and morphing it into a variety of different shapes (Muscular man, Skinny man, etc.). It is very user friendly, and models can be reshaped in a matter of minutes, without ever having to consider individual vertices.

I will definitely be implementing the 3DS file format, but I am sure many of you are aware of, has several limitations (DOS 8.3 file names for textures, texture mapping limitations, etc.). I guess that the .X file format would definitely to be implemented.

Also, please note at this time, the software suite is for morphing and 3D painting only. I plan on introducing a modeler package to the suite in the near future.

I will also consider making a "gaming edition", so I can strip out the Poser specific features and charge you less :o). Although the 3D painting software is already really cheap compared to it's counterparts.

Ok, I'll strongly consider implement 3DS and X file format support. Are there any other features that the DarkBasic community would find useful (within the scope of a morphing and 3D painting package)?

Konan your demo dosent import cr2 files, says it cant find file *.OBJ ? and Obj files cause File exceptions in the Morpher something or other !! Have you got your code round the wrong way for the imports ??
Won't be spending $99.95 yet think a bit buggy and not much use with these formats, but good work when you get it fully working, bit more debugging/testing before you ask for 99.95 not quiet worth 9.95 at moment IMHO but promising WIP

If the OBJ file is not in the same folder as the CR2, you are prompted to locate it. This is not a bug, rather it is analogous to locating a missing texture.

There is a hidden featue to add search paths (such as your Poser Runtime folder) so these files can be located automatically. A gui interface to this feature will be added in an update in the near future.

Blacksmith3D - Morph is the sucessor to "Extreme Morph 3D, which has been around for about two years. The CR2 feature is new. Given the dynamic nature of CR2 files, it will not support every feature of the CR2 (e.g. replacement body parts).

So, if you like, please load the CR2 file again and locate the proper OBJ file manually. If you still enounter an error, please report the problem (with as much information as possible, including the offending CR2 file) to me via email

http://www.blacksmith3d.com/contact.htm

and I would be happy to investigate the problem. Also, please note that you can also import the OBJ file itself without the CR2 file. You can still export a CR2 file as long as you specify the original CR2 file.

BS3D is the most bizarre 3D modelling program I've ever seen. I don't mean that in a bad way. It's sort of organic and non-taditional.

Currently, I'm messing around with Curvy 3D. I'm going to try out BS3D after I'm done exploring Curvy 3D.
