Hey folks,

Long time no post (since I disgraced myself by not meeting the remakes.org deadline, and managing not to get anything together for the TGC compo )! Oh, and I missed the convention. Blimey. So sorry folks. I have commitment problems Just don't tell the wife.

Anyway.. I was just looking at this -

http://www.nuclearglory.com/nn/

...and I wondered, would 'you' pay to subscribe to an on-line game written in DBP? If so, how much would you consider paying?

I guess it depends on what the game is, so here are some options..

1) a one-on-one FPS, last man standing type thing
2) a puzzle, turn based game
3) a MMOPRG (ha ha, had to put that in there)
4) a trading game

I'm from the old school of online gaming, basically you pay for the game, not for a monthly service, but I guess these days its different.

So, it might just be me, but I thought it worth asking. You never know, with demand great enough I might attempt to code something to the publics liking.

Cheers,
Ilya

I wouldn't pay monthly to subscribe to any game.
If I did, it would have to be a 3D MMORPG.

The default editor is fine.

The same here I'm afraid. I've only done it once, and the subscription didn't last too long (3 months)

People dont usually like to pay for subscription but with the cost involved in running online gaming its just the reality sadly. Although I would imagine something made in dbpro using nuclear networks would be cheap enough to be worth it. So if the game was good enough I would probably consider paying.

Yes, the service is actually going to be reformatted. The way it is configured simply does not work well from a marketing standpoint.

As far as software and integration go NN is a really nice piece of work, but that doesn't mean it'll market well.

In an effort to make NN successful I believe I will swing the door wide open and make the service free. Will cover costs with ads on the site. There will also likely be an "upgrade" option if you want the ads removed. Similar concept behind free website hosting.

Will people still have to sign up or will I have other options?

(Never used NN before)

I'm open for suggestions on that one. There are a few methods I can see working. Some examples:

A) We host your network and memberships. People visit our website to login, change their status, etc...

B) (Silent version of above) We host the data but it can be done from silent integration on your own site.

C) You host all of the data and are responsible for checking usernames/passwords when someone logs on to use your network application. You just use the plugin to connect to our service and say "yes, it's okay for so & so to transmit data".

There was, at one point, also talk about opening our service up for database support so you can keep player status, etc.., on the server.

This topic is really up for discussion and I would appreciate feedback.

The only real thing is that the service must be able to cover it's costs. If that much is done, we're happy to provide it.

Subscribers? No, although we will leave the subscription system intact as a way for you to charge buyers if you want too.

What we are likely to do is load an advertisement or send them to our webpage or something before they start playing your game. Something needs to happen at that level for us to justify freely using the system.

I'm open for ideas about how to handle this as well.

Option B rocks.

That would be very cool. Especially since most of us are with cheap webhosts and don't necessarily have database features where we can store even simple stuff like rank, kills, etc.

Yeh its probably a good idea to allow people in your game who are subscibers and pay to get additional features etc designing our games that way would help nn stay around and work out properly.

Hi,

Making the service free would be good, it would attract more users/players impo. If you can make ends meet through advertising on the site, it'll be a winning formula.

Something else that I'd really like is some way to do local testing of on MP game using NN, without being on-line, using some kind of service/server, if thats possible.. I know you can fake it up with the DBP MP commands, but I appreciate the NN stuff functions differently so it might not be a realistic request.

Cheers.

Thanks for the feedback all. It will help immensely.

Any other suggestions?

I'm trying to collect as much feedback as possible so the next "go-around" on this will be better. A poll is also likely to be sent out to current NN members to get field feedback from users who won't see this thread.

You mean generic MySQL support for like your own database? Or do you mean MySQL database access at NG? Or both?

This can be done best through simple HTTP protocol access to a php page to handle/update/retrieve database info in/from your own database. So, that would be a vote for simple HTTP protocol commands then.

9) no

anyone who charges to pay for a game AFTER the initial cost is a scam artest. I mean, if there were a SINGLE PLAYER mode then it wouldnt be so bad (that is, if you dont have to pay for SP)

look at Diablo II and Battle.net, they have OPEN BN and CLOSED BN, they dont charge for either, and all your characters you start on CBN are stored on the server, but yet, they still dont charge.

Can we use this for DarkTOPIA? We need a decent server thats free and that can handle potentially high traffic. Mnemonix and I can usually be found in the IRC chat #darkbasic (darkbasic.chattingaway.com port 6667) You had mentioned this to us a while back when we first started with DarkTOPIA, well we are almost there and considering our options...

Thanks

Sure, I don't see why not. We have to respect server limitations/cost though. If you can agree to that much I can agree to the rest

Lemme re-learn my IRC proggy. It's been awhile.

That would require some sort of... intelligence script or something you could upload for the server to parse and use to act as the player. Might not be so bad, just some generic data handling commands and so on... That's one to think on, might work out well

I've never paid a subscription for a game in my life but theoretically I am not opposed to the idea...I have just never found something I've considered worth it.

Ive payed for a fair amount of pay-to-play games (all mmorpg's though). I dont like it but when you get the big servers... it sorrta becomes really heavy work on the server. So as long as the game keeps my interest and the cost is fair I usualy dont object to pay-to-plays.

Just my 2 cents on the pay-to-play thing.

If it was good enough I'd pay for it but you'd have to get around the deficiencies/bugs in DBPro multiplayer and make it one really great game.

Thanks for the posts all. I believe we'll open all of the options we can without driving us backwards. No expected ETA on this. It is something we desire to do soon however as our games will be running multiplayer on the same technology.
