After much hard work I've finally finished my game Ring Worm. You can download the full game (20mb .zip file) at my website. Even though its too late for me to make any changes for the competition, any feedback will still be appreciated!

Sorry, no screenshots up at the moment, I'll put some on my website soon.

No doubt, this will get the full points for presentation and music. Plus, I rate you very highly in each of the other catagories. If you've submitted your source, then I can see this as one of the top prize winners.

Very ,very well done. You were even able to get me away from my entry for 30 minutes.

Back to work for me, but this is a definite top ranking entry in my opionion for the snake catagory.

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah, I have submitted my source in the submitted version.

Yeah, as I've played it so much while making it I lost track of how hard it was getting!

At the start was there a robotic cat moving on a checkered floor, or was it just a white square, because some people's computers couldn't play the avi?

I enjoyed playing although I think it could have done with a bit more variety in game - Maybe some power-ups/downs of some kind. Anyway, overall it’s very good and should do well in the compo.

Well done and good luck

AVI plays fine for me.

Currently re-writing the game and re-doing sprites for 800x600 (was 640x480). This game will get a release soon.

can you not put everything in the exe, because it will reduce the size of your zip file, put them in a directory named media next to the exe

@Custard Thanks! Glad the avi works, think it didn't work for my friend because he can't play an Intel 5.1 avi.

@IanG Surreal Studio I read somewhere that it loads the media quicker if its included in the exe. As I was worried about the long loading times in the game I thought it may be better to have the slightly larger zip size if the loading times are shorter.

it won't load it any quicker because it has to extract everything to a temp directory, so it should be slower

That makes sense. Thanks IanG, I'll make sure to use a seperate folder for media in my next project.

Very good, great idea of turning into the enemy to show damage rather than just having a health bar somewhere, neato
I love the options/level select screen. Very cool with the flipping buttons and zooming to the different tunnels D

My main peeve with the game is the tutorial starting up straight away, choosing to view it from the options screen would be better imo (yeah I know it can be turned off, still annoyed me first time :p)
And it is bloody hard, but that's not necessarily a bad thing ^^

Thanks for the reply.

The tutorial was one of the last things I added in. Unfortunately the way the menu and text is done would have made it difficult to have the tutorial run part way through the menu. As I only added the tutorial in a few days before submitting I would have had to recode most of the menu just to fit the tutorial in. It was only possible to add it in at the start with the little time left.

As for the game being bloody hard, I fell for the trap that alot people do when making games. While making the game and testing it I had got so much practice in that I considered the levels seen in Ice and Volcano to be an acceptable difficulty. It was only when other people played the 50 levels that I realised how hard it had become. I made the first 20 much easier for Jungle and Water. I don't think Jungle and Water are too hard but I agree that the others are extremely difficult - even though not impossible with enough practice. I do find though that the harder towers are best played in Endurance and Classic mode, as a score can at least be achieved. A score of 25 in Volcano Classic is a fun target to go for with just a little bit of practice.

Following the competition results and the comments I had about it I've made some minor changes to Ring Worm. The changes are:
- Music is done as .mp3 instead of .mid (as the judges couldn't play .mid so it may be the same for other people playing it).
- Can now skip the tutorial with escape or spacekey being held down.
- Enemies now move at half the speed! The game is no longer too difficult; very easy is now very easy and normal is normal (instead of normal mode being ultra-hard )

The download is 26Mb and can be downloaded from my website. Don't worry about the site being freewebs, it downloads the actual game from an ntlworld site where its being stored.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Have fun!
