Hallo,

Since I see a lot of questions here related to exporting models out of our beloved 3D modeling programs, wouldn't be the right thing to make an official exporter for DBO files for most used programs like:

3DS max
Maya
Cinema4D
Lightwave
Milkshape
.
.

I think that in spite of DirectX format is free, Microsoft never made an application that could export from native formats used by 3D modeling programs to .X format. Everything is left to endusers to find their way to make this happend to their own. There are programms like Polytrans, Deep Exploration,...but they cost a lot of money for conversion to something that is free...and the end result is not always as would it be expected.

So my question is actually:

will TGC made such a tool to end once for all this conversion (exporting) issues ?

Have a nice day,

Tomaz

Why some people take programming so seriously ?

probably one for the one that the 3d modellers that the tgc employ use

its likely just to be a community thing

some high-end programs require an expensive license to develop plugins (exporters), so it's not very cost-effective for a relatively small company like TGC.

I think once the .dbo format is finalized and official, they will release the details of the format and wait for users like us to make exporters for our favorite modellers.

Personally I think an exporter for milkshape would be enough as it is!

As far as I know, there is no license for writing exporters.

Walaber: What programs require a license to write plugins? Max, maya, and lightwave don't.

hmmm, perhaps I have my head up my a** again

IIRC, there was a thread on the Ogre forum about a MAX exporter, and they were having trouble with licensing issues... perhaps that's because OGRE is open-source?

Your not allowed to redistribute the SDKs for Maya/Houdini/XSI/Max/Lightwave freely.

What gets me about the Max one is you can freely download it from thier website without even owning Max. Then again it might just be a case of mis-read EULA. Discreet aren't exactly known for thier perfectly clear Licenses; GMAX is a very good example

This said, the DBO format is not going to be 'stable' until Update 6, aparently. That said, I was told that by the same person who assured me that DBO was going to be ready for Update 4.

What we have now shouldn't change much, but there are still major bit missing from the format; Skeletal Animations is a good example.
