Hi,

I'm writing a few programs at the moment many of which are based around the internet. I'm creating an FTP Client, FTP Server, Webserver and my own update system for any programs I'm going to write.

I have two computers, my new XP Pro machine, and my old 98 SE Box. What I want to do is convert the 98 box into a machine that just sits there and handles all of my network programs. A server basically. I do really want to use my own software, as I can test it and shape it to my own needs.

I do only have one broadband internet connection. So what I am looking for is a cheap router that will allow me to share the connection between the two boxes. It doesn't need to be wireless, as the boxes can happily sit side by side.

It only needs two ports, and I'd like to keep the cost down. Has anyone here got any recomendations on routers that are a) pretty good and b) pretty cheap (£20-£50 range).

Back to google I go...

You could do what I do...

2 Network Cards in the Main Machine.. 1 for Net, 1 for Lan.
my lan connects to a hub then to 6 other machines, but you could just connect them up directly.

take your XP CD and run it on the 98 Machine, you can now use the Network Wizard (part of the extras) which can communicate as a gateway with XP. worked v.nicely with WindowsME, but god knows how well it works with 98SE.

uhh... just get a crossover cable and connect them together..

your xp machine should work just fine to connect to you se box for internet, after you install ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the 98 machine..

Connecting the two to network can be a process in itself, which is better left to you searching the internet if you have problems..

If you're looking for added security with a router than go for it otherwise your computers will live happily on an ad hoc network

ick. just get a cheap linksys wired router and be done. why involve windows runtime in your internet connection to one or the other machines, youd need 3 nic cards anyway, bleh. Cheapo 4 port linksys and youre done (dont think they make 2 port).

should be able to find them at about 30-40 usd

My friend just bought a linksys(i think) router for $40. I think it was a 5-6 port, with 1 wireless, and came with a pci wireless card. Not a bad deal. I got a 5port SMC router for $30.(after $80 rebate)
