I have a wonderful innovation that will help the world. There are 2 things that I am worried about however: the costs and the public.

I want to start this somewhere. Where would I begin and how?

Go to google and search inventing or possibly go here at your own risk of judgement.

If you are worried about the public, maybe it's too dangerous to sell

lol, in the US the best way to deal with it is to hire an attorney or seek help at your local job service.. They usually know what to do because they are the ones helping people find a way to become self sufficient

Since you're in Canada you should see if there's any similar services.

It's not a good idea to hire any online services for patenting

Sorta reminds me of that Simpsons episode when Homer works as a lab guinea pig and ends up blind...

Doctor:
''Who would buy a medicine that makes you blind?''
Suit:
''We'll let marketing worry about that!''

The sad thing is, there's thousands of great ideas, and they're all clogged up in the crud hole that is the patent system - it can take years to register a patent, and that's before you can safely 'pitch' it to companies.

...which is why many things are labelled "Patent Pending".

Did you know that the wheel was "invented" in the last few years by an Australian? He realised that nobody had ever patented the wheel, so he did.
