Does anyone know if there's a .dll or anything that will let me use a soundfont file to override the sound card's normal midi instruments?

I don't think so. Since only Creative (and very few other) soundcards have hardware support for soundcards, it's got a rather limited audience.
Microsofts DirectMusic has something similar. It's software based and therefore uses up quite a few resources. The concept is rather nice, though.

Does any of the new stuff in the enhancement pack help? I'm not very experienced with soundcards, but there's some sound stuff in the pack:

The thing I'm concerned about is the fact that midis sound different from computer to computer. I know that there are better formats to use in that case, but there's going to be a LOT of music in the project I'm working on, and I don't want the program to take up a hundred megabytes or anything. I was just looking for a way that I could force a set of midi instruments. I know it's possible, because I've seen a few (non-DB) games that have done it.

Ah, try recording the MIDI to an MP3 and use that.

Well, the only problem there is that the space is vastly increased if I do so. The midi count so far is 23, and rising; it'll probably be around 40+ before it's done. The game's download size would be increased by probably between 50-80mb if I used mp3s. That's why I'm looking for some sort of alternative.

My other choice would be to convert the midis over to a tracker format like .it, .mod, .s3m or .xm, but I don't know if DBPro accepts them. I'm also not thrilled with the way programs attempt to convert midis over, as they generally do an awful job of it.

dosn't DBP allow .ogg files now?

I'm not sure it might be something else. OGG files are smaller than mp3 but higher quality too.

They're occasionally smaller. I tried converting some mp3s over to oggs, but some actually ended up being bigger for some reason.
