I'm currently working on a space sim along the lines of the old classic elite, my aim is to have at least 20 star systems for the player to visit and each system will have planets and asteroid fields etc, I have been working on this project for a couple of weeks now and the screen shot show's a small fraction of what I have created so far.

Looks very nice SteveS. I'm a big fan of space sims, so this should be interesting.

Thank's for the offer, your screen shot's look very nice, here is another screen shot showing a view of your ship travelling in a warp tunnel thingy, this mode will be used for travelling large distances in your current region.

Well, of course you can. Admittedly, you do need a pretty good telescope to see them that big, though.

Nice lense flare effect french gui.

If you have Photoshop, you can do it with Filter | Render | Lens Flare.

I think to be realistic you'd have to calc the orientation of the camera to the light source, and blend in the flare only when appropriate. This is something I just started working on myself, got the flare down yesterday.

As regards Lens flares, there is a helpful explanation on how to code them together with accompanying code in my Vector Tutorial.

Incidentally, nice to see other people working on 3D space trading games. This is my ongoing project as well. I've been working on my game since July 2003 and I am provisionally hoping to release it sometime late 2005 (it is, to put it mildly fairly complex!).

Cheers

Philip

PS: @SteveS

The rings around the gas giant look nice. How did you do them? The method I have used in my project are ring textures on a plane which is then faded, alpha'd and ghosted.

See also http://www.solarvoyager.com/tutorials.asp for some good tutorials on how to do ring effects.

Philip, the same way as you have done them, I created the ring texture in Texture maker, trying to get the cassini, and enke's division in roughly the right place and then just textured a plane, ghosted and faded it.

No problem. I like that website as well.

Also check out Scifi-meshes.com if you like really professional looking 3D spaceship models.
