Visual Studio .NET 2003 has C++, Basic, C#, and some other stuff all in one package. So Visual C++. NET 2003 comes in Visual Studio. So you only need C++ unless you want to do some other stuff.

If I were you I would wait for the Dev C++ version to come out so you can use a free compiler. I would get it now so I can get used to it before the Dev C++ version is ready. You can get it here.

Well, Dev C++ is really an IDE, but the install comes with the Mingw C++ compiler. The Dev C++ compiler and the Visual C++ compiler are different but it is still C++. You need Visual C++ 6 or Visual C++ .NET 2003 to run Dark Game SDK for now, but I'm sure they'll have other compilers work with it.

EDIT:An IDE is just the stuff you see when you are coding, like the editor the options for the compiler, stuff like that.

You can use either C or C++, which one is up to you (or you can use a mixture of both).

There is a version of Visual C++ which comes with a book and the full VC++ Standard edition all in one package for less money (No idea why but thats microsoft for you )

True - although it doesn't come with all the nice optimisations, although that shouldn't really matter.

I've got the Boxed Standard edition (Didnt know about the learning one) And that also doesnt have the optomisations. You need VS Pro for that stuff aparrently.

Though in the past (VC++6) where I work, we've found the final code may run quicker without optomisation Might be a bit bigger but runs faster. So we tailor the optomisation to the bits that it makes a difference on. Not sure about VC++.NET 2003 yet though.

@dark angel1246: If you want to purchase, you have Visual C++ .NET 2003 on Amazon.com for only 90.99$

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000089GKV/qid=1101984616/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1_etk-software/104-2963221-4365543?v=glance&s=software&n=229534

Anyway, Microsoft should release Visual Studio 2005 in the next few months. I suggest you downloading the Beta version of VC++ 2005 (it is FREE) and buying the final version when it comes out, hoping that the price will be the same as for .NET 2003:

I think the .Net 2003 compiler is much better than the VS6 one, so you should find that optimisations help.

I didn't read the entire thread but I have to say if you buy Visual Studio .NET and you are in an academic environment, then go to Academic Super Store. You can get an academic version which is equivelant to the professional version for $90, which is off of the original price of over $1,000. I bought my copy from them and it is great. And if VS.NET 2005 is coming out in a few months then the Academic Super Store should have it when it comes out.
