Chances are you haven't heard of it, but for one and a half years there's been a DarkBASIC IRC chat room. It's a friendly place that almost always has a few active members (peaks around thirty). Founded by Mnemonix, the channel is run by him and Jimmy; lagmaster is the friendly neighborhood IRC operator, and a few devoted regulars make up our friendly op squad.
To join the room, just use the Java client
right here, or navigate to the Developer Network section of the TheGameCreators site and, on the left tab, mouse over 'Forums & Chat' and scroll down to the chat option; or, using an IRC client of your preference (
mIRC is the most popular option), connect to the network irc.chattingaway.com at port 6667 and join the room #darkbasic.
Most of the time DarkBASIC isn't the topic, although almost all of the regulars use some TGC product. Discussion ranges from personal issues (generally EricT's, because he has a lot of them) to programming to technical support to, of course, DarkBASIC specifically. If you need DarkBASIC help there will almost always be someone there to help you out-- just ask nicely.
Fair Warning: While operators are there to put out flamewars and kick spammers, the chatroom is a fairly unmoderated medium. Generally speaking, pretty much anything goes including strong profanity, so if this bothers you please don't join.
The things we DON'T allow are political or religious debate or argument of any kind, warez discussion, or extreme vulgarity (if an op warns you, take the hint).
Similarly, don't spam, nag, or whine or you might get kicked or, at most, banned. Bans rarely last for more than a few days, so if you get in trouble, try dropping by at a later time when you're feeling calmer
.
And if you're a known plagarist or troll on the forum, don't expect a warm reception... if you're not, don't worry, we are actually quite friendly.
Here are a few basic commands to help you find your way around IRC:
/me
SOMETHING: Emote, for example (
/me waves becomes
Mouse waves when sent to the room)
/ignore
SOMEONE: Use this to ignore someone if they're bothering you. If you want to un-ignore someone, type
/ignore SOMEONE none.
Similarly we've got a friendly bot Tumbleweed who you can use to perform Google searches--
!google
something to search for
!image
something to search for
And he'll return the address of the first result. Rather handy.
For those of you knowledgable of IRC, the network offers custom services bots, custom VHosts, active IRCop help, and a friendly atmosphere. There are also alternate game design and chat rooms with slightly different atmospheres, though #darkbasic is the busiest.
We look forward to seeing you there!
