I just found a site with a free beta download of 3D modeling software. Comes with a few sample models (people, animals, objects, terrain). Object manipulation is quite extensive (figure position, facial expressions, feature manipulation).

Daz3d is the company that purchased Bryce from Corel.

The free software they're giving away is basically a digital art creation package, not a 3D modeling program per se. I'm not knocking the program at all -- it looks stunning (and I'm grateful to these guys for keeping Bryce alive). But I haven't seen anything in the particular program that would be very useful to somebody wanting to create and animate 3D models.
