heres a dragon model i'm currently working on. i'm aware of some modeling glitches but i won't sort them out till its a complete model.

one other thing. how can i reduce the poly count? i'm using 3ds5 for this model and need to reduce it badly. i'm not telling u the poly count unless u really wanna know.

i have done the body but its not seamlessly attached just yet. i'll post a full pic when its completed. i would show it textured but i dunno how to texture in 3ds. had a go once and it kinda worked but it didn't render in 3ds.

chears for any comments. just download it and have a ganders

That looks excellent. A good scale texture is all I can really think of to complete it.(besides the body, of course.) Will you distribute it for free once it is finished?

oh and just one thing. I'M COMPLETELY NEW TO MODELING.....HONEST

quick at learning though

[Edit]

Just Added the body and legs this minute. Although they ain't joined seemlessly, you can get an idea of what its gonna look like. I'll be working on the tail next and then onto the wings when thats done

got a render of it to look at. click view to get a glimps of my fine creation

i just decided on doing a polly count of the dragon and it's come to a staggering 140612

i somehow think i've shot myself in the foot with this one. any1 know of any proggys that can reduce the polly count? when the tails done and the wings i might be looking at over 200k of pollys.

i dunno whether i'm right in saying this but i don't think any graphics card could cope with that in a game let alone 2

did someone use meshsmooth???

tip of the day: don't use meshsmooth for an entire model

200k of pollys is high, try the multires modifier to try and bring the poly count down

Or even better you could use smoothing groups, they help a lot and no added polys. Seriously take off the mesh smooth, add more polys manually if needed then use smoothing groups to make it look sweet

lets just hope he hasn't collapsed the modifier stack, otherwise he will have to start again, unless he saved it before every collapse

since you said that its a work in progress you're surely gonna add some big clawy feet too right? and how about some wings? but other than that - really cool stuff

For when they said I couldn't, I did...

as far as i'm aware i'm not using mesh smooth. well i hope i'm not. will have to look into that.

yeah i'm gonna be adding claws and wings eventually. i think i mentioned that anyway

well i am learning still. but i'm not gonna be a happy bunny if i do have to start again. once is bad enough, but twice....eeeek

oh and IanG. it isn't 200k yet. i'm not gonna let it get that high

Well if you have not applied a MeshSmooth modifier there, is an inbuilt one in the edit poly/mesh stack (i think), but you can turn it off. And I really hope you dont try and run that mesh in a game even you dont reach 200k polys! Could make a good dragon with way less, like 1500

well even if its too big for a game. its a good attempt i'd say for some1 new to 3d modeling.

when i get round to the game though i'm thinking of adding some cgi movies into it (whichever format DBPro likes). i know of a few ppl who wouldn't mind putting some sounds to it. we'll see how it turns out anyway. i think it'll be good practice. never know when any of u might want a movie animator

i'll keep posting pics of it anyway.

p.s. i never ONCE used any mesh smoothing at all. yea i smothed it but its no smaller with it off. i think its the bane of all spline users

i am going to suggest that you start over just using the model you have now as a concept for your game model. try keeping the polycount low from the beginning and just try to get the overall shape done before getting in to details. it will make it much easier on you.

Time for an update. i just spent the last 2 hours doing the wings for this infernal creature. i've uploaded the render as usual to show u how it looks now.

@Corporal Tunnel. i don't need to start over what-so-ever. i found out of shear luck that theres a gismo in 3ds5 that allows me to reduce the poly count dramatically without loosing any definition.

i just got to do the claws. how many toes u think i should have for the feet, 4 or 5?

hop u like the new render. (ignore the colours)

right i'm gonna apologuise in advance for the double post i'm about to make.

Sorry for the double post

i now managed to lower the poly count to about 14% of the origonal model and i'll show u both models. High Res and then the low res (reduced count).

let us know what u think of it

high res model

now the low res model

as u'll notice. there don't seem to be too much of a differance in the way they look.

but heres an example of what i mean.

high res model = 7.3meg as a .x file
low res model = 735kb as a .x file

high res poly count (approx.) 350k
low res poly count (approx.) 30k

do u think it'll need to be reduced any more or is that quite ok for a game. bare in mind that there won't be too much on screen at once and u'll be able to get up close and personal with them at some points

I actually think that the legs might be a bit closer together - if you can do that. Is is one whole object or is it made up of different objects such as:
LLeg1
RLeg1
LLeg2
RLeg2
Head
Body
LWing
RWing
Tail

tail and body are as one object. legs are sepetate as is the head, each wing and each foot.

i can move the legs closer i think. i can give it a try anyway. the feet are proving hard to get right. might go back to the drawing board with them.

i'll try and scale the body in places and see what i can do with it. i'll post a pic with the legs closer.

i've started to animate it but i'm not gonna go into details yet till i've totaly finnish putting the bones in.the tail seems to be the hardest so i'm doing that 1st.

@ThomasFN here u got a dragon on a diet. yes its thinner. was a pain but it still looks ok.

any other sugestions that any1 wants to make??

edit was for the pic

That does look better. Even though professional models usually use textures, I think the green body and the blue wings sort of blend in.

i've yet to figure out the texturing part yet. not really any good at it to be honest.

what tools would u sugest i use to texture it? i know roughly how to texture in 3ds but my skills are seriously lacking.
