My mom wanted to know what I wanted for christmas, but I don't know! So I said that I wanted two 1Gb kingston pc-3200 DDR SDRAM, but is it worth it? I already have 1 GB, but it is two 512 sticks, so I thought I would get to 1Gb sticks, to give me exactly 2GB of memory, but will this really help?

PS: I play alot of games.

You can never upgrade your computer enough really can you? If I was you I'd ask for 4 gig for xmas, an ATI X850, couple of 250 (or bigger) H/Ds,keyboard with gelled keys, flying mouse,, sound dome, and a dog with a bouncy head to sit atop your monitor.

I'm an aussie, we don't get things till a year or 6 after the rest of the world (I can't even get ADSL where I live, then again I think electricity is "just fantastic") I'm not sure about the rest of the world but we don't have them here yet.

Heres info on it anyways

Books? Why would I want books .

That X850 looks pretty sweet, but I am not sure why ATI doesn't just stick 512mb of memory in the darn thing! I mean my radeon 9800pro has that much memory, and it is over a year old now.

I'm still living off 256mb, non ddr. I don't think it's worth to turn two 512s into one 1gb. Ask for some games, or money to buy game making apps, or something. I'm sure there's a game you've wanted.

I like to get fun stuff on christmas, and I realy don't need Ram yet, atleast not untill a game comes out that is really demanding, but I can play everythign absolutely perfect right now, so I am good. By the way, what would yall recommend for a cool gift!

But when your bored you can pick up the book again and read it. And, you can learn a hell of a lot more from a book than you can a tv program.

What is it with kids today? Why would they rather learn from TV than a book that they can reference to?

I'm sorry, sir, but you should be shot for that. Books are a great thing, I mean have you ever read anything by R.A. Salvatore? Or D.J. MacHale? The Harry Potter books even?

You're probably scarred by the books your school makes you read. Those suck, end of story. Now go to your book store and pick up some real literature.

Cheers,
Preston

Books at my school are little pieces of books that they found in the "School that buys a room full of up-to-date computers (30 or 40), and wants to cut transportation for High School, and too cheap to print newspaper on paper anymore, to save money.... so we buy these cheap loser books" section.

Boooooring...

your waisting your life if your feeling bored.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself

I don't like school books..

A good book outside of school is nice, but like our school will ever have a book written by a decent writer.. Pffft

o_0 ... when did ATI produce a 512MB Radeon 9800 PRO?
I'm pretty sure that the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra 512MB is the first and only gaming card to have that much on-board memory.

To have that much is just ridiculous, especially in terms of cost. Ram is what makes Graphics cards so damn expensive even after the cost of the GPU R&D is covered.

This is why NVIDIA has come up with 'TurboCache', that allows you to use your system memory for storing. Your graphics memory is then used purely as a frame buffer. ATi also have 'HyperMemory' but no one knows what the hell that is capable yet, other than ATi have claimed it's better than whatever NVIDIA are developing. (this might explain why it isn't out yet heh)

With PCI-Express, and the new 64-bit AMD Processor designs. PCs are very quickly becoming much more optimised like consoles. I'm really getting quite excited about the direction IBM-Compatible Systems are taking

As for the X850, you can only get it as a Plantinum Edition. They cost WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much, and still can't outperform the 6800 Extreme. (nice try ATi but no Cigar)

R520 has finally been shipped, the 'development' version that is. Quite impressive, something I have to work with for the next 5years (joy).. but not going to break any records like the Gigabyte 3DI.
Dual 6600GT GPU with 256MB GDDR3 on PCI-X.

Outperforms everything, including the new X850 Plantinum according to preliminary tests. As it isn't a Dual Cards, but Dual GPU Card.. it is capable of using SLi natively. If anyone remembers this is what 3DFX did with the Voodoo3.. as the current reports indicate, NVIDIA's product lines are going to look very very cushy for this comming generation.

just after christmas going to be putting together identical systems, for engine testing. So looks like i'm going to be spending more time with both cards now rather than one at home and one at work

As far as what you should ask for, for Christmas goes. Personally I'd recommend getting something to help you develop your games.
I dunno really, I mean I dunno what you like; and christmas itself amps me up about as much as a gopher over using a firearm.

Computer games are probably the best route.

Sorry, I should have made myself more clear, I meant that my Card has 256mb of memory. And why would you want 512? Because pretty soon games are going to come out, that are going to need 512mb of memory to store the High res textures, much like Doom 3, which needed a 512 card to really play it at it's ultra graphics.

Someone needs to be educated a little more in how computers work.
Doom3 Ultra runs fine on any 128MB card, you need 1GB System Ram however to take advantage of it.

my gamecube is capable of rendering scenes that on my pc would run out of ram... considering my GC has a combined 40MB and my PC has a combined 196MB, you'd think my PC could handle more.

fact is down to how things are programmed, and simple fact of the matter is that if the game is programmed to load everything to gfx ram, then that's what it does. loading things to gfx ram means there is less latency between instance calls and such because its on the card and not needed to be called through the cpu... with PCI-X this really makes this a moot point.

everything stored on your graphics card will always be in you system ram too, again this is how the API works and you code it up. OpenGL for example tries to store as little as possible on the card itself.

this is why TurboCache and HyperMemory are going to be a big deal when it comes to game developers. alot of companies are either going to have to adapt pipelines or simply refuse to support these cards. going to have to take a more 'console' based approach to game development.
