I am going to be getting one of the cards in this website http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/GeForce_6800_GT.html for my new super pc (athlon64 3500+, 1Gb corsair pair). Which brand do you think I should go for? (apart from the two gainward - they cost too much). I have an idea of which, I would like your opinions too.

Thanks a lot

athlon 65 3500+, 1 gig of corair...copy cat, thats what I'm getting for my new PC

anyway, get an xfx card. even better get two - two 6600gts in an nforce 4 is almost as good as a 6800 ultra

For those on a budget... I've seen several online stores selling FX 5700LE with 128 to 256 megs of RAM for under $100 US. And you can find Ultras for under $140. The FX 5700 LEs and Ultras are DirectX9 enabled and have shader support so you would get the most bang for your buck when developing for DBP.

and the new Gigabyte 3Di Dual 6600 GT, actually out-performs every card on the market.
it all depends on how much your willing to spend really, here Gainward aren't that much; but anyways:

Albatron, PNY, and Gigabyte are the best in the current card producers. A number are alright, I would just suggest don't buy the budget cards; as the developers skimp a bit on features.

FX 5700LE, not worth it. Make sure if you get a 5700, it's Standard, or Ultra. I've heard ALOT of bad things from the ones named after the Radeon symantics... LEs perform horribly and don't support alot of what the cards should, XTs generally perform the same as the Ultra's however they use budget parts and cause alot of compatibility issues. Even heard a few cases of Burn-outs.
(of course comsumers blame NVIDIA's hardware, when the chip is fine.. the manufacturers are the ones screwing witht eh forumula for bigger profit.)

I would strongly suggest a few things when buying cards:
- Only purchase those with GPU Names: GeForce 4 FX, for example is often a bad sign (especially considering FX is Series 5)
- Do NOT purchased the cheapest you can find, generally they have budget / low-grade parts or heating solutions.
- Always use trusted manufacturers. Visit card websites to find list of these.
- Make sure to read up on the system requires for the card prior to purchase; nothing worse than hearing some idiot trying to use a PCI-X card in a PCI slot and then wondering why it burnt out.

ATI Radeon 9200s have a lot more power than people give credit for. Entry-level it may be, but it still whips the ass of cards that were considered super-powerful from back in '98.

And anyway, I'm using an ATI Radeon 9600 Series. No Ultra, no XT, no stinkin' nuffin. And I can still, in a windowed (window size: 640x480) program get a rotating red sphere going at 640 frames per second, and I can run UT2003 at 1024x768 32bit at roughly 50fps. Works for me.

But they're more expensive than thier GeForce alternative (FX5200) and are less powerful. Heh, while it is good to know I can always fallback for £35 and get myself a 9200 for playing Unreal 1, I'd prefer to be able to play Doom3 and Half-Life 2 at a reasonable speed.
