Just watched some proggy about life and are we really here and all that jazz. They showed a scientist who had made that little life simulator thing. I just thought I'd give it a go in db and it's quite interesting.

Here's the source and image files if you'd like to take a peak. Press/hold space to spawn some new life cells. You can tweak the variables in the initialisevariables sub aswell.

Worth a look!

Edit:
The rules are:
- If an empty cell is adjacent to exactly 3 full cells, a new cell is born.
- If a full cell is adjacent to more than 3 cells, it dies of overcrowding.
- If a full cell is adjacent to less than 2 cells, it dies of isolation
- If a full cell remains unchanged for 6 generations, it dies of age.

Yeah, appologese, it's a DBPro proggy.

The idea is that giving a few cells a set of a few basic rules, they'll go off and perform complex operations. By just giving it a few rules, you can watch it spawn walking creatures (on a very simplistic level) that I didn't code, and explode in a kinda supernova way as a civilisation of many die out (which I didn't code either).

So far I've seen:
-Mini walkers
-Death explosions
-A spider that keeps spawning mini walkers (only seen that once)
-A hive type mass of cells that crept round in a circle.

It's not a game. Just a curiousity.

Osiris, it's in a few places on the net. Here's one, it doesn't have death from being unchanged, but I've never heard of that rule before...

Mate, it's not worth going to the trouble of getting DBP just to look at this. It's a really simple 15 minute proggy! If you're gonna get the trial anyway, go for it, but don't get it just for this. It's not worth the effort!

Nice .

I remember an old Atari Lynx game that had a level that used a life algo as a wall, you'd shoot bit's off it and end up making matters worse .
