I have an AMD Athlon XP 2000+, it runs at 1.25 GHz by Intel standards. So I decided to overclock it, now it runs at 2.083 GHz.

Yep I got it to safely overclock to about 800MHz faster!

whats that got to do with anything??

i wish AMD didnt multiplier lock the CPU's, all i can go on is FSB, therefore i can't go higher than 11*215=~2370.37mhz because my RAM gets unstable if i set it any higher, before over clocking it ran at 2.2GhZ

ya! cpu? it go pooof!!! (don`t do this at home kids unless you have an adult handy or an healthy bank account) ...800 mhz extra must need some serious cooling and will shorten the life of the cpu anyway due to hotspots developing.

Mentor.

PC1: P4 3ghz, 1gig mem, 3x160gig hd`s, Radeon 9800pro w cooler (3rd gfx card), 6 way speakers.
PC2: AMD 2ghz, 512mb ram, FX5200 ultra, 16 bit SB.
Mini ATX cases suck.

@mouse I can take screenies if you want me to, in order to prove it.

I talked to my neightboor about it and he told me to post here about it to see what programmers would say about that.

@bear crazy donut what? I just set the FSB from 100 MHz to 166 MHz and the DRAM Frequency from 200 MHz to 333 MHz

You can't overclock a 1.25ghz CPU 800mhz without some significant increases in cooling-- well, unless you don't plan to have it last more than a day or two. Since you've given no explanation of your methods and have proven even more ignorant with PC hardware than I am in the past, I hope you'll excuse me if I completely rule out the possibility that you properly installed additional cooling for your PC. So either you're trying to get a little 'street cred' , or you actually dealt a death blow to your CPU and it's just a matter of hours until it kicks the bucket-- I sincerely hope the latter isn't the case, though.

i overclocked it 3 months ago, I just told my neighboor yesterday.

my flashpoint (killpoint) is 90 C, it runs at 55C and has peeked at 60 C, but thats about it.

I have two case fans, fan on my graphics card, 2 power suply fans and a single CPU fan. Runs about 35 C below the flashpoint.

Athlon XP's were made to overclock just like Celerons (they're cheap if you burn them up trying). I know several people who run the XP's at the speed they bought them (XP3200 @ 3.2GHZ and so on with water cooling) you need to keep it cooler than that though, just because it isn't at the flash point doesn't mean you aren't shortening its life. 60C is too hot. I like to keep mine below 50. Remember 60C is 140F which is around 600 Rankine . 50C = 122F is much better.

@ lost in thought: don`t you mean durons are like celerons and athlons are like pentiums?, anyway, running at a higher temp will shorten it`s life, I wouldn`t kill something just because it was a little slow, you could press it into service as the server for your home network for example (if you have one), or use it for rendering BSP maps so that your main PC is left free, imo you can`t have enough `puters about the place.

Athlon XP's were so much cheaper than P4's here that there was ne need to buy a Duron. Almost everyone uses Celeron or Athlon XP here. There are a few good things about being in the south and in the middle of no where.

know whats funny, I really didn't overclock it. I set it up to what it is suppost to run at. It is suppost to run at 166 MHz (FSB), the factory settings of the Mobo BIOS had it set slower then it was suppost to be.

At 2000+ doesnt standard run at 2000mhz or so

Around 1600 -> 1800mhz instead


a 200mhz overclock is quite safe though.

they do run at the mark speed, but becasuse windows uses intell standards, they say that they are slower.
