thanks for the swift help!

But one thing's missing - let's say ur a terrific born artist but never painted before. if you start using psp6 without ANY HELP WHATSOEVER can you make good textures?

next, let's say that you are a terrific born artist who doesn't like to explore the tools in psp6 and sticks with what he knows (just a few effects and filters). now can he create good textures?

finally, if your not a born artist can you create good textures at all (with or without help?) in psp6?

For when they said I couldn't, I did...

With a program called texturemaker you will be able to create good textures fairly quickly. PSP or photoshop is much harder to use and is not really designed for making textures, however when you actually learn how to use it, it is invaluable. You can not make a good game without a good paint program. You will need it to make the menus and all the other images in the game.

Paint is always top of my recent programs. Please don't hurt me!
I don't have anything better.

i don't really know if im an artist (texture) or not - nobody's seriously commented on my work so i wouldn't know. but i can draw a full texture provided i'm given a proper sample.

here's a sample of my hud in my game

@IanG: what did you mean by "waste of hd space"

photoshop costs a bit of money (i think), but there are other ways to get it...

or you could just use the Gimp

DeHonCha - That HUD is really nice. He means that you shouldn't ever use paint so it just takes up space on your hard drive.

If you have any drawing experiance what so ever, getting a tablet for your computer would be a good start.. I use a combination of OpenCanvas (a japanese drawing/painting emulator software) and PhotoShop to add texture to my already painted materials.

There are a few ways to make textures.. two types I know of is Painting it all, and then there is putting things together using pictures.. the secound is easiest if you dont know much about painting.. though the first migth end up more styleish.

Anyway, there is little you can do on a 3D model with paint.. its good enough for pixelart even though its a bit slow to work with as for tools etc. but for textures you will at least need something as PSP. Gimp is fine, but there is no support I know of for tablets.. But works fine for the picture method. I would strongly recomend to buy Photoshop, if you've got that kind of money.

your HUD looks good though Keep it up

@ andrew neale - paint (i think) is the basis of all great textures / art - i used it when creating the hud so keep it - you'll never know when you'll need it next
