I'm modelling a character that I will use in some game later on, and so far I have everything except the head. Every attempt I make, the head comes out looking alienish and wierd... how do you guys (the pros) do it? Thanks

PS: I'm using milkshape, but any suggestions you have will be helpful.

one approach that works well for me is to have a front and side reference image set up in their respective viewports. next i make a sphere to represent the eyeball. set that sphere where one of the eyeballs will be. next create a strip of polys around the eye to create the lid. then extrude the outer edges.then make the mouth out of a strip of polys. then try to connect those two pieces and cut edges between them to make up the cheek.
let me know when you get this far and then post a pic so i can see if you are getting it right. the most important thing really is that you have good front and side reference images. talk to you later

Use vertex modelling, there is no better way to do it, I also find it easier if you have a reference image of a human head, and then model it from that, use the nose as a map of how to do the face, a human nose splits the face in half, so try modelling only one half of the head, starting from the nose and go out, after that side is done, select it (use face select) go to edit>duplicate selection, then you need to flatten it so go to edit>vertex>flatten, click the axis you want it flattend on, then go to edit>vertex>weld to make a head a whole object, I used this process and made the following...

Vertex manipulation is the way to go, never ever use box extrusion when making an organic model, it just doesn't work! I use vertex modelling for everything now!

Here's a good tutorial on low poly head modelling:

This is from www.3DTotal.com an excellent resource for modellers...

Wow, thanks guys! I'll keep 3DTotal in mind.

I guess I just need good refrence pictures, does anyone know where I can get them? Thanks.

And I will use vertex modelling. I find that using the CreateFace plugin to be way easier than using the Face tool. Thanks!

Are you using the newest version of Milkshape? Because it made creating faces easier, now you just start clicking away, no clicking the face button every time you want to make a face.

I have 1.7.2, and I prefer to just select 3 verts and press the 'F' key, even though sometimes it's facing the wrong way.

I got a reference pic from my How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way book, so I guess that's all I need. Thanks guys!
