hi,

i'm having trouble with my graphics card (or something else?).

i replaced the motherboard in my comp the other week, to get rid of my msi(kt4 ultra) board (that freezes on occasions), to an asus A7v8X.

done it all fine, added an extra stick of 256mb ram to 768mb.

booted machine up. stuck xp install cd. various points during the install it kept bsod'ing.

dont ask how but i managed to install xp, after 20-25 attempts.

while using windows it kept bsod'ing again. 3 days ago while transferring files to a different drive, the monitor went into standby mode then came back on. ati diagnostic program dont me the card wasnt responding and has switched to software/no acceleration mode.

at other times, when trying to boot xp, logonui.exe wont load to let me login and sometimes kernel32 crashes.

on another inspection, i try and run partition and before it loads, it tells me i have a bad partition. also when running chkdsk it also grinds to a fault on my 2nd drive (160gb) not my 1st 80gb one.

here's the graphics card info and driver version.
sapphire radeon 9000 pro
graphics version: 6.14.10.6497 30/11/2004

since it switched to software/no acceleration no more bsod's has occured. but it's left me baffled to what is going on.

any solution would be a great help.

Doesn't sound like a problem with the card, but the mobo as the changes happened afterwards, are you sure you installed it correctly?

yeah, added all the stuff correctly, set the bios right.

baffles me why it hasnt bsod'ed since acceleration is turned off

ah, so you did everything like set up drivers?
this PCs graphics drivers seemed to disappear yesterday and I had to find a hidden windows thing to reinstall them

take out your ram and leave in 256mb.. then try to reinstall WindowsXP

i had the exact same problem recently with my mobo, and windows xp
kept thinking it was the installation disc when it was the blasted hardware.

check your agp drivers for the motherboard and check that the graphics card isn't getting too hot, if it has a fan check it is spinning fast enough
edit:try reducing the agp speed in the bios, your new board may be set too high, set it to 2x or 4x i don't think the 9000 supports 8x (it might but try reducing it anyway)
check the agp apature too, set it to 128 or 256 if you can.

update: i left the machine on overnight, played half-life yesterday and today.

then the pc froze, restarted and no freezing yet (no graphics errors or anything)

just seems to be a random problem :/

Parts of your RAM may be inaccessable. Like, the computer is going "We need more RAM!" "Oh, hears some way up there." "CRAP!! I CAN'T WRITE TO IT!!! (explodes)".

Try moving the RAM sticks to different slots.

on testing with the ram, i found the new 256 stick wont boot up on it's on.

time to send it back.

the BSOD should have some kinda code, when i have a problem i jot this code down and go to the microsoft website at the local library, type the code in the tech support and i'll have the problem fixed 20 mins later.

sounds like hard drive problems to me, or a faulty mobo
