try to get the tool 3dsconv.exe , it converts from .3ds to .x, works in dos mode and it is in the sdk of the directx9 (you have to search it or mail me at
[email protected]) (about 300 kb)
The .x files is more compatible with dbpro.
And finally, the "copy" when you clone an object is a must, i'm experienced in 3dmax and i can say this: convert all your objects in editable mesh and delete all the history of the objects, avoid mirroring and when you have to scale or deform and object, select "XFORM" and then modify your object, finally convert it in editable mesh and delete its history.
