I'm throughly disappointed with DBPro. It crashes all the time giving memory errors etc. I've ported four individually textured boxes from 3ds into it as an experiment. NONE of the Textures work even with UVW mapping/unwrap and I've tried putting lights all over the place and still nothing, different brightnesses, ambient, and points. I think this is appalling - it's not even Beta quality software. Although it might be my dual Athlon causing the problems - or would it be Direct X 9.0 making it play up - or Win2k problems. But DB was working fine - textures and lighting just loaded in without any probs...
DBPros on the shelf now.

What about the lights? Is light 0 on by default? Should I switch it off? I switch
off ambient light to 0 and make light 1 and place it close to the model - in DB the change was obvious but in DBPro
nothing happens...

Cool. Thank you! I seem to have light control now! I used
color light 0,0,0,0 to sort it out.
Now, I can alter the light BUT the boxes aren't smoothly
shaded - the illumination is wrong and you can see the
triangles that make the square sides of each box. Is there something I can do in the modeling package?

I think that problem is a mixture of your graphics card and DBPro, I'm afraid. I think there are illumination problems of some sort, but I haven't really seen them.

You could try increasing the output quality in your modeling package.

It might also be worth try setting a shading command too...

Okay I managed to download a direct X exporter and now the 3d elements can be textured okay as .X files and the strange triangulation goes - in fact I get pretty accurate texturing now! So I think that problems solved - god this package is so tetchy! Also, I got a moving light to test the lighting and now it all works fine.
Be aware:
For some reason light 0 can't be moved (???) so I just color it 0,0,0. and use lights 1 upwards.

Now has anyone managed to get:
1. a way of contructing height maps inside DBPro using fractal mathematics so I can make planetscapes (using matrix) that can be constructed with a single number and are always the same? (Eg: so you can make 1000 planets with just a thousand numbers - and the planets are identical whenever you return). I'll get around to it, but if anyones already done it...

I seem to say this a lot but you have downloaded the latest patch right? I had all these problems till I used Patch 3 and everything's hunky dory for me now (I think a lot of people buy it and assume that it'll come with the latest version. Unfortunately the original release version didn't appear fit for use as a frisbee )
