Hi all,

A while back we decided to drop las6's really popular online highscore code (as seen in DUOtris) into DUO. Not content with that I decided to give it a major overhaul as well.

I've replaced 90% of the graphics (honest). The new graphics look very similar to the old as I wanted to keep the character of the original but are hopefully of a higher quality.

I've also replaced all the bullet and collision code with code I've devoped for our new "engine". This means it all runs noticably faster and the gameplay is even smoother (certainly on medium and lower spec PC's)

And to celebrate the increased speed I added a bit more motion blur and a new "Psycho" difficulty level. This was really just an excuse for me to throw more stuff around on the screen but it's turned out to be a real challenge for anyone that found the original too easy......I know there were a few (Hi Peter ). I could have really upped the action to push DBPro a bit harder but it would be totally unplayable.

Thanks again to AaronF for the music, las6 for the online code and graphical guidance, plus kenmo for additional playtesting.

For all those that missed the first version here's the original thread....
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=29481&b=5
....I was going to say compare the graphics but as I've used the same filename that thread shows the new ones as well.....heh, trust me they're better now.

And the "has he really redone all the graphics?" screenie....

Excellent . I only quit because I need to go to bed . And on that note, I got the top online score, but pressed escape (instead of purposely losing), and it didn't give me a chance to save my high score! GAH!

Otherwise, it's still as great as it first was . The winning combination - Shooting stuff, with things... and they explode! I'll certainly be trying to get that high score again .

Isn't it? Wasn't it? Marvellous!

Noooooooo! I got the high score again! Plus level 90, and then I accidentally pressed the button on the side of my mouse along with the lmb, and it quit with "array subscript out of bounds on line 790" or something.

Isn't it? Wasn't it? Marvellous!

@Hamish McHaggis
Glad you enjoyed it

Appologies for the problem with the mouse. DUO uses a lot of old and TBH fairly laughable routines and the mouse code will have a seizure if you press a 4th button.....hey I was still learning Anyway thanks for pointing that out, I'll change it.

I also think allowing people to enter a name for a highscore when they press escape is reasonable. I'll add that as well.

@Ermes
lol. In this case I think I'll take being called mad as a compliment.

Anyway the V1 quotes were made by people here and on LLRGT so maybe they are really the mad ones.

The V2 quotes may well be fake....I'm not sure

@Peter
Quote: "ARG...noticed that when you load you're game it doesn't load the score!"

heh. Yeah that's to stop people loading a saved game repeatedly and flooding the board with their mega scores
This way any high scores must be set in one session without dying so are a better proof of ability.

You can still flood the highest level board though....have fun

@Everyone else who apparently wants us to stop making games
Err.........Nah Many thanks.

Hmm, I'm trying to get past the final levels, but it keeps randomly giving me "Sprite alpha value illegal at line xx", and quitting on levels 93 and 94.

Looks like there's some serious competition for highest level going on between Hamish, Peter & the mysterious "mac".

Although Peter has the highest score comfortably to himself..... for now

@Hamish & Peter
I've uploaded a new exe so if either of you good men could let me know if it's ok I'd appreciate it....then I'll upload it officially.

http://www.binaryzoo.com/misc/DUO.rar

-Fixed bug that caused a crash with 4-button mouse.
-Added ability to submit highscore even after quiting (ESC) game.
-Hopefully tracked down the cause of the "sprite alpha" crashes. Looks like it was my fault completely so you can rest assured I'll be giving myself a good kicking

Thanks.

@fog: Do you get more points for you score if you play it with the graphics completely cranked up... Difficulty aswell, or is it just difficulty? Or not at all?

Well, the problems seem to be solved, but this game is turning into an obsession! It's become one of those annoying games that you repeatedly play the same bits over and over, getting angrier and more tired every time you get 5 seconds into the game and get smashed to bits! These last levels are such a jump in difficulty, I may have to give up soon before I put my fist through the monitor .

Isn't it? Wasn't it? Marvellous!

@Merix
lol. No the amount of FX you have on doesn't effect your score.....nice thought though.
Only playing at a higher difficulty level will give you a higher score. Try playing through on Psycho level.....that shouldn't be too hard

@Peter
Thanks for testing that. Alpha problem finally solved by the looks of things.

@Hamish
lol. Yeah the last few levels are killers....quite literally.

I started playing it again and I am placed at #8 . I downloaded this game on my parents computer and let them have a go at it. ( They enjoyed it, actually they are still playing it )I think this is worth paying a little cash for. You should keep this up it is a great idea.

Apart from any now unlikely bug fixes, this is pretty much the end of any work on DUO but we have a load of new ideas to try out for future projects.

Love it, despite me having the accuracy of chimp being electrocuted while playing.

@fog:

Hi, you replied to my game on LLRGT - I don't think I've extended the same courtesy and given you any feedback on DUO though...

Well, it's easily the best 2D game I've played on DB. It's also in my top 3 all time DB fav's. Everything about it screams high quality, but actually, my favourite bit is when you end the game and it flashes white and says "Thankyou" - that was just the cherry on top of an excellent cake

Excellent work throughout, and strangely compelling

@Drew Cameron
Hey thanks Drew. Always been impressed by your programs so I'm glad you liked it.

Heh the "Thanks" at the end was put in on the original DUO when I'd have been grateful if just one person had taken the time to download and play it (although I secretly hoped there would be about 10 )

Near 10,000 downloads last month though so I guess it's fair to say it did better than I could ever have hoped for.

As for the presentation thing. Well it obviously takes a little bit longer but it's hopefully worth the effort. If you've spent months on a project then why spoil it by avoiding a couple of extra days work on the presentation?
