This is somewhat of a slighty strange question. How do you pronounce Linux? I myself say it as LIN-YOU-X but my friend pronouces it as LIN-UCKS. So, which - if either - is correct?

Lin not line, that I could make out as theres no E! So Lin-ucks seems to be the general consensous, oki doki!

Same as DavidT. I believe Americans say it LIN-UCKS though. Saying it makes sense because it doesn't have an E is kind of stupid, like saying final is pronounced fin-al, just cos it isn't spelt fineal. English isn't a phonetic language (not that Linux is technically and English word, but if you speak English, you generally follow the rules for any words).

The correct Finnish pronounciation is something like "Leeenux", with the 'i' pronounced as a long 'e', and the 'u' very short.

The name "Linux" comes from a cross between the original developer's name (Linus Torvolds), and the word "UNIX" (since Linux was intended to be a freeware clone of that OS). Linus is Finnish, and pronounces his own name as something like "Leenus" (rhymes with... don't make me say it!)

Most people I know pronounce it phonetically ("Lin-ucks").

I don't think it's LINE-UHKS because the original creator's name is pronounced Lihn-us.

It is much easier hearing than explaining, considering the fact that english isn't exactly that phonetical

Swedish and English, as spoken by the creator himself.

Li-nux .. can't remember how the dictionaries put things, but it would be something like L~ih-nu^ks. or something. as i said listen to the au of them

I prefer to pronounce it as linix. Since it's Unix based, it ought to sound like Unix (yoonix) right?

Besides, if it was pronounced linuhcks, then we should also pronounce Unix as yoonuhcks. It would be cacophonous to the word "eunuchs," as in castrated people.

lol yeah... well Killswitch simply asked how it was 'ment' to be pronounced, and oddly most people did pronounce it like that long before they heard an official name for it.

the reason behind how you pronounce the name is because it was originally going to be called Freakz, but it was changed.
not that it matters much as uni students will always correct you on it, which is why i prefer AmigaOS / MacOS / Solaris / Windows / etc.. don't have any smart-arses with them, well past those people who seem to think it's amusing to write:

Micro$oft Windoze

kinda stupid and annoying when ppl do that.
