Hi, I have 576kbps broadband, and a LAN network [ethernet] operating @ 100mbps, and all [3] computers connect to a hub: and I have shared a broadband connection to allow all the computers to connect to the internet. It works, but I have a couple of questions:

1) Is there anything to get it working faster? The internet is very slow via the two [not directly] connected computers.

2) I have a dual boot with Linux on my main computer, and I would like to use this to access the internet via the gateway computer which runs Windows XP.How can I get it to recognise the hub and join the Windows network. EDIT: Linux cannot automatically retrieve an IP adddress for some reason, so I assume this maybe t do with the hub.

Yep, get rid of the hub and replace it with a router.
The Internet Connection Sharing in XP is pathetic. It's slow and it screws up your IP addresses. It just generally sucks. If you don't want a router though, you could get a space box and stick linux/windows server on it and use it for routing and a firewall .

For it to automatically detect an IP address you need a DCHP server, which assigns clients an IP address for the network. Routers include a DCHP server, so that's another reason to get one

Q: Is there anything to get it working faster? The internet is very slow via the two [not directly] connected computers.
A: That depends, what slows down alot of networks without people realising is while thier HUB is 100Mbit, often is the case they go for cheap network cards that are only 10Mbit. This should still mean you won't see any drop in internet speed though.
A MAJOR factor with networking equippment is making sure to get Full Duplex Hardware. This is extremely important because if your on Half Duplex you card can only do one operation at a time, either receive or send. As such this will bottle neck the entire network... Some cards require you to put them into Full Duplex mode manually, and other cards will do it automatically but this is the biggest speed killer.

As for Linux, well I know that most Knoppix builds will connect seemlessly into Windows ME/2000/XP/2003 Networks Seemlessly and detect on boot. Thing is Linux is fussy, and it doesn't like communicating directly to Broadband Modems without having the registering NIC inside that machine, so while Windows will happily share a modem through a hub, you'll have to setup one of the machines as a network gateway to the internet. Another problem you'll face is you can't use Linux as Windows doesn't like communicating with it.. While it'll share a network if it's in-charge it won't use something Linux is shareing. It's fussy that way really.

www.speedguide.net and get the TCP optimiser

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself

You can increase the internet speed using a program called cablenut,
http://www.download.com/CableNut/3000-2155_4-10124235.html?tag=lst-0-1

It made my internet faster, also if you run an anti-spyware program and get rid of all your spyware it will also increase your internet speed.

I read a book along time ago called Hacking Windows Xp, thats what told me to use cablenut, the book has a small section on increasing network speeds. But u can find out most of the stuff from that book at their website http://www.tweakxp.com

All the hardware [network cards]is/ar pre-built into the machines [custom build] and they are all 100mbit LAN compatible ethernet cards, which cost £52 each. I'm not sure of the duplex mode @ the moment, but I'll open them up and take a look [again].

As for cablenut, I'm gonna give it a go this weekend.
