The Pro release notes claimed they were tossed in favor of replacement with more advanced animation features, but I think they should have waited on that until the advanced stuff was actually finished. IMHO, the commands you're talking about were some of the most useful in the entire command set.
You can "fake" this support if you have both Classic and Pro. The saved animation output from the Classic SAVE ANIMATION command can be cut and pasted into ASCII format .X model files which are playable in Pro. You're basically emulating the APPEND ANIMATION command, which was also removed from Pro. The restrictions you'd expect do apply -- the model you're using to create the animation in Classic needs to be the same one you paste your animation data into via Notepad. That is, don't save animation data for a three-limbed tank model and then try to use it with a 25-limbed model of a female humanoid character.
Or, you could just wait for Mr. Underhill to release C-Anima

The Notepad route is a very good learning experience, however.
